    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82 650 bogging issues

Ok so i have an 82 Suzuki gs650 that I got in rough shape recently it has new plugs, coils, pod filters(didn't have an air box and had these laying around) I have put an exhaust on. It's a stock Yamaha maxam 650 exhaust that a friend gave me. I pulled the carbs off and took them apart and did a basic cleaning on them checked the slides, floats cleaned the jets and bowls. It ran before I did this but not very well. Now when I start it up I have to shoot a bit of starting fluid and it fires up pretty easy once it's warmed up and choke is off it idles fine. When I took it on a test ride however it would ride fine until 3500 rpm and starts to struggle, it doesn't pop and crack like starving for fuel or try to die like it's flooding. Hard for me to explain wished I would have gotten a video of it. it just seems like it's having trouble going any higher.

Just want to make clear all I want to do for now is get the bike running where I can ride it around town and then fine tune it and rebuild and replace things to make it better over the winter.
 
My suggestion for the first two things to do would be carb clean and valve adjustment. :-k

You say you did a "basic clean" of the carbs, but the problems that cause the symptoms you are observing are not fixed by a "basic" clean, the carbs need to spend a night in "the dip", then get all new o-rings. Click HERE for the best tutorial on how to rebuild your carbs. Go to Cycleorings.com for your o-ring kit. Be sure to also get the o-rings for your intake tubes, as well as new stainless bolts for the intake tubes.

Seconded.

Clean the carbs correctly and replace the intake O-Rings.
 
Also get an airbox. Alternative to that, purchase a Dynojet carb jet kit and proper set of K&N Pod air filters if you don't already have them. The bike will not run properly with stock jets and cheap pods.
 
Over the winter look for an airbox- they come up all the time on ebay- it will make your life simpler.
heed the carb cleaning advice or even your around town riding will be frustrating.

Ill get pics of the fit when I get back around to the bike maybe later today. The maxam exhaust has fully adjustable heads so it went on very well with the pipes loosened all I need for it is some exhaust gaskets and it will be perfect the only hiccup so far is the center stand I think will not be able to come down but I haven't tried yet it'll be close. As far as tailpipes and baffles I will be putting something short on it because I don't thing the stock baffle setup will work, but once again I haven't had the chance to test fit yet lol.

As far as the carbs go I will be following the guide and the whole 9 yards just as soon as I can. I hadn't thought about the valve adjustment though but since I'm doing all this other stuff I will go ahead and do it too. The pods will also be replaced with the stock air box I only put them on to restrict airflow somewhat to get it running I'm looking forward to this being a daily next season as long as everything goes well with the wrenching and testing.
