Ok, my bike has neither auto-canceling turn signals or running lights in the turn signals. Are these really standard?

I have been told my turn signals really have 5 positions, not 3, for the auto canceling, but it definately feels like 3 only.

The running lights have two wires going in and a ground. This makes me think running lights.

Thanks in advance.

some of those have the turn signals and the headlight on the same single button that goes side to side and up -down

by now who knows if all the controls are stock as it was created in the land of the rising sun.

3 wires and a double fillament bulb= running lights. check the bulb and socket a lot of times a wire is broken or cut .

Hi Mr. Skyboy8950,

It could be that your stock turn signal relay or control unit is malfunctioning or the relay has been replaced with an aftermarket or generic unit. The 5-position turn signal switch is not a "hard" 5 positions. On my bike, I punch it all the way over in one direction, then it snaps back to a position slightly less than "all the way over", but not back to the middle. This is the intermediary position between the middle (signals off) and the outer positions (initiate signal).

My bike did not come with running lights, blinkers only. I'm still formulating a plan to add running lights. I've read here where the larger/later bikes (than mine) had running lights up front, but I don't know exactly which models.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Stock... 5 position switch, auto cancel turn signals. The end (R-L) positions are spring loaded
no running lights.

They definately do not spring into the intermediate position and definately stay on. The flasher unit is stock. Maybe the PO put a new switch on. I do have the combo hi/lo beam turnsignal unit. Is this the self canceling unit?

Sorry for the short response.
does your turn signal switch have on the lower right of the of the face of it, the lettering auto turn?

Then it sounds like someone has changed the switch to me.
(3 position switch- no auto turn)

Sweet, another part to buy... Let me know if you read this and have one that you want to give me anyone!!!

Wow this makes sense

Wow this makes sense

Okay, sorry if this seems like dense thread hijacking, but I just installed turn signals on the rear of my bike and there's only one cable and then the grounding wire. This means that they're only supposed to turn on once I hit my signal switch?

Thanks in advance.

When else would you expect them to be on? :-k

Light up only when signaling.

No running lights, in other words.

I checked my front lights. They have two elements. Coming out of the lighting fixture are a red and black wire. The grounding wire is connected to the nut, but then it is not connected to anything else. The black wire is the grounding wire, red is hot. What the heck?

Stupid POs and their "improvements".

Thank you. Sorry to sound like an idiot, I just guessed that the lights were to remain lit and then flash after I hit my signal button. I suppose they didn't have the technology back then! lol:D

I'm definitely relieved that they're working the way they're meant to.

Only newer GM cars that use the turn signals as their Daytime Running Lights will have them on all the time, except when they are flashing. I have some problems with that concept. I appreciate the DRLs, but please don't use the signal lamps. When (not if) one of them burns out, you are left to wonder ... is that a burned-out DRL, or is he turning in the direction of the lit light, and he has problems with his rear bulb? (Most car's signals don't flash if a bulb burns out, so if the rear burns out, the front comes on steady.) Too much uncertainty with vehicles that might be headed my way.

Back to our GS bikes ... not sure when they started ('82 or so?), but some of the larger bikes, 1100, 1000, 850, had dual-filament bulbs in the front signals only. This gave the capability of running lamps to enhance the apparent size of the bike, especially at night, when you would see three lights coming at you. Keep in mind that the running light filament is not nearly as bright as the turn signal filament. This is the same bulb that is used in the back for your tail light and brake light.

At the back of the bike, there have only been single-filament bulbs. These are exclusively used as turn signals, never for tail lights, as they are yellow, not red. Just like the front, they come ON (then OFF, then ON, etc.) only when the switch is activated.
