  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

82 gs 1100g

i recently purchased an 82 gs 1100g . i was wondering if the tank, seat, side covers,and tail from an 1100e would fit? i like the look of the 1100e much better.

All the items you listed would not simply bolt on to the "G" frame. Tank mounts are different, seat brackets are different, side panel mounts are different- the whole frame is different. If you have a cutting torch and welder and are good with them both, you can probably make it work somehow.
 
the bike parts that exchange with those on the 82 gs1100gz are those off a gs850gz (82).

also the 83 model 850gd and 1100gd are exchangeable.

any year 1100gk tank, seat, etc., will also fit.

if you like the looks of the e better, you should've bought an e.

I'm in the same boat as Rodger, being as I just bought an "L" model 850GL and don't like the styling too much. I like the shaft drive and also like the ideas I'm having about changing it though, and in reality changing mounts and modifying some metal tubes aint hard at all with a mig and some cutting discs. I say get to building it!

This was done with very few modifications to a CB750.

I'd like to note that I put that picture up here to spice up this forum with something nice looking, because in the last 3 months the string of "wax?" "scratches?" and "emblem replacement?" threads in this forum have made what could be a really cool forum turn into something insanely boring.

Oh yeah, and telling a guy to buy a different model stock bike when he asks how to mod his just really takes the cake. That's just top notch shit right there. Lets not make our bikes look cool. Rock on.

What happened to the cool mod projects here?

I'm messing with two GSs at once right now. Pics to follow, but I can't be the only one. I mean damn.
 
sorry that my answer disappointed you so much, isaac. i apologize for stating my opinion that it's silly to try such mods.

i guess many folks here are more interested in preserving the gs than in modifying it.

i was just trying to tell the guy what other bikes stuff is exchangeable with his, rather than have him waste time and money modifying things instead of preserving them.

if the guy wants to make the parts off an e model fit his own bike, fine with me.

i'm sorry you're so bored by this forum.

Im actually looking into some mild mods for the appearance of my bike, but haven't come up with any good questions, comments or pictures to show, so I just read about other stuff. still gathering ideas and geting the core bike back in shape.

I dont especially like the look of that modified bike you posted, looks "unfinished" and that seat -ugh.but I can see where some of those styling cues could look good applied a lil differently.

orange county chopper/monster garage this aint. Im not looking to cut or weld anything if I can help it, something more along the lines of the street fighter that was recently posted with all the blue accents, that bike was more to my tastes.

face it isaac, we are a group of techno-grumps keeping old bikes together.guys with new bikes mod em, guys with older bikes are just happy to keep em in running condition for the most part.

this winter it all comes apart and gets some appearance rehab work done.I bet alot of the others here are in the same boat.

Alright, I'll bite...what exactly has been done to the shiny black one? That's one of the coolest GS bikes I've ever seen....where is the tail section from?

I'd like to modify my 700es in lieu of not being able to locate fairings or a gauge cluster...has anyone adapted just the top half of a dual headlight early GXR fairing or anything like that to an older bike? I like the street fighter look, and I don't mind the top half fairings like my 700 has, but I am wary of covering up an air cooled engine with full fairings.


Anyways, that bike kicks arse....
 
Like Isaac, I too just got a 80 GS850L project. My bodywork and seat are trashed, and I was wondering if I could replace them with the bodywork off of a regular G model. Also does anyone know what air boxes would fit this bike. I know the 79 model had different carbs than the 80 but right now I can't seem to find an 80 airbox. There are a couple of 79 boxes on fleabay right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I dont really have any answers as far as what tanks and panels fit directly onto another bike, I just know that anything is possible. if you wanna invest the time and money you can accomplish any transplant you can imagine.

I might be inclined to fabricate side panels or just get some basic measurements and head to the boneyard. see what looks close and modify from there.

Im planning on nothing as drastic as the bike I posted above, but certainly that attitude, something somewhat up to date would be nice.

looking at maybe trying to graft a headlight/fairing assembly on but unsure yet what Im gonna get. will haveta just go looking.
 
Icarus, that bike you put up is awesome! See that's what I'm talking about. That's not too radical; just a light modification of the side panels and a truncated rear panel with modified tail light, plus some different handlebars and maybe moved guages. That's all it takes to take a GS from "HEY I WAS MADE IN THE 80s!!" to "wow! whats that?"

That's what I'm going for.

I've decided I like the bike less as is. Here's what I'd do: Double headlights, black forks, and possibly spray the wheels black or anthracite.

I REALLY like the way they did the tail on that. It's just what looks to be a painted sheet steel panel, bent over the top of the subframe ends and bolted up, with a shiny sheet steel panel as a bezel/holder for the discreet tail light. Great stuff.
 
Awesome stuff...I'm seriously contemplating a street fighter look, and the dual headlights are one thing I'd realy like to incorporate if I go that route...

Thanks for the Redneck link, it jogged my memory for the magazine title that has eluded me for years....AWOL. My buddy used to get those back when we ran our paint shop, and I guess they stopped publication. I have tried and tried to recall the title, and found a reference on that site. Thanks! If you'd never seenit before, it was a great custom bike mag, with tons of great ideas and wild machines.
 
Minus the orange that's good stuff. Almost looks like a SV now. I wonder where they got the tail cowl from.
 
great bikes, need to find that magazine. The orange wheeled one looks like alot of work though, it didn't come with a single shock swingarm did it? That means alot of custom framework for the shock mount right? I would also like to fit dual lights, and possibly a custom seat/tail on my GS450L. You can get dual headlight assemblies which are somewhat universal in the catalogs, but they run $150-600, so it's the junkyard for me. If I don't find a tail while I'm there, I may try the sheetmetal method from above, it seems feasible, at least much more so than the swingarm/frame work.

Anyone know where to get rearsets like some of these bikes have, the ones I have in mind are just an aluminium footpeg that have a pivot built into the lever so that you can mount it with only a single bolt thats built into the peg. I am trying to find them so I can get my feet in a comfortable spot by moving them to a different spot on the bracket.

This one is pretty cool, very similar to my 700, same wheels and stuff...I like the idea of modifying the factory frame:

I think I like the factory tank look of the other black and the gray ones...those little mustang tanks don't really have a shape that floats my boat. I'd like to switch around factory parts a little more, using non-harley looking bits.

It's too bad those Redneck guys went out of business, they were doing some awesome work. I never thought older GS five spoke mags would look good on a modified bike, but they made them blend well with the designs...


Another area to pull ideas from is flat tracking, they use trunicated rear ends and offer many fenders and seats...my father-in-law used to race a Yamaha TT and it looked pretty cool, I always thought they'd make a neat road bike set-up...
