I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Sounds like you narrowed it down to the igniter or the crank trigger.
You did say you got both coils to spark swapping wires right?

yea when i swap the wires from the right coil to left coil it sparks this is gonna sound stupid but where would i find the igniter or the crank trigger thanks for the fast response

Greetings and Salutations!!

Hi Mr. Trunr4life,

The location varied a little between models years. On mine the ignitor is under the left sidecover, to the left of the fuse box below the solenoid.

You can see the ignitor (black box) to the left of the fuse box.

You'll find a manual and igniter troubleshooting tips in the links below. If you do have a bad igniter, may I suggest installing a Dyna-S ignition? They are about 1/3 the price of a new igniter. Even used igniters are pretty expensive. Anyway, you'll find lots of GS850G lovin' in the links below. :)

If you are here you probably have a 30 year old motorcycle that needs about 20 years worth of maintenance. You'll find all kinds of helpful tips, procedures, manuals, diagrams, "how-to" guides, etc, in the links below. Let's get started.

Let me dump a TON of information on you and share some GS lovin'. :D

I just stopped by to welcome you to the forum in my own, special way.

Make sure you have good connections from signal coils to ignitor and from ignitor to both coils- connectors sometimes behave badly!

yea i cleaned all the connections and everything is pretty clean i was just wondering if 81 gs igniter would plug right in to a 82 or if the re different

It appears that they are identical -according to parts fiches.

Hi,

Is there anyway to test the igniter box ?

Look in the electrical section of my little website for troubleshooting tips. The factory manual is a good place to start too. ;)

Thank you for your indulgence,

I'm sorry guys for the stupid questions fellas but is it possible for one coil to spark and not the other coil if the ignitor unit is bad

Does anybody know if the igniter box has to be grounded to the frame ?
