A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

HELLO

New member here and also this is my first bike
I have an 82 gs1100 from a guy for a non working car and the bike ran fine for a while. well the other day i was coming back from walmart and i started to lose power like it was hasping for gas/air got home then it started to run fine well i went to leave somewhere that night and i noticed that it started popping from the right exhaust then it just died and wouldnt start unless i jumped it well i did a carb clean and noticed that it didnt have the rubber plugs on the pilot jets, and not its leaking oil on the top left of the engine right buy the round section also i noticed that there is a rubber hose on top of the engine that goes to nothing( should it go to something) any info will help as of right now i wanna rebuild the top section

also forgot to mention that it idles sluggishly and dies without choke

not sure which model gs1100 you have i had the gs1100e 1983 model and it did not have any rubber plugs so i did not put any in so i guess if they are not there then probably you do not need them but i am only guessing because i am not sure on your carburetors perhaps someone else might have more information but i rebuilt two sets of gs1100e carbs and neither set had any rubber plugs in them so i did not install any in them and they ran just fine so perhaps there is some other issue with your carbs good luck

then you should be ok on the lack of rubber plugs because neither set i worked on had them either and the rubbers at the end of the cam covers are leaking you can use rtv on them or replace them they are not that expensive the rubber hose is the valve cover vent hose it should be routed over the carbs and down by the swing arm pivot so it would drain on the ground in case it leaked instead of on the bike

Punctuation can be OUR friend, as well as yours. Ray.

I considered that, ray. Then I realized if that is the only way he knows how to write, then possibly that is the only way he knows how to read. So I obliged. It was interesting, to say the least. ;)

ONE period in an entire paragraph is punctuation to you? Then you tell someone not to be a dick?! Do you think that is the best way to get help around here?
Ray.

Oh I'm sorry I guess I misunderstood this forum. I thought I could come here to get info on my motorcycle, not my grammar. Yes I said don't be a dick because he's being a dick. Of course I'm gonna stand up for myself when someone makes fun of me. Who cares if my grammar is bad this isn't a grammar forum. you don't know me and you sure as hell haven't been what I've been through. Not all of us have the luxury of actually staying in school. So if your just gonna criticize my grammar then you can F off and I'll get my info elsewhere.

Hmmm, well you don't know us or what we have been through either in our lives. Grow up...or go somewhere else. There I broke my rule.

Pretty sure I'm not the high schooler making fun of other peoples grammar.

It may be just me, but I'm thinking that this is not the best way to ask for help. Just suck it up and let it go. Stop carrying a chip on your shoulder for things that happened in the past. Who cares if someone criticizes your grammar as long as you get the answer you need. There's been a lot of times I've said to myself "what a jack a$$" but still got the information I was asking for. I'd say you came out a little too fast with the big "dick" guns. Just let it roll off your back and move on.

Hi,
iv got an 82 gs1100, mine is an L model and its exactly like koolaid kid has described. Sorry i dont know whats wrong with your bike but as a fellow bike rider i do sympothise, i would suggest however you remove the plugs to isolate which cylinder or cylinders are offending. If you have a strong spark at each this would appear to indicate, electrics are ok but then it may be timing. The fact the choke alters the running or not of the engine seems to me like your problim may well be Carbs but give the guys on here as much information as possible and get the mentainance up to date. Stephen.

Before starting any kind of diagnosis on your bike it is IMPERATIVE that you take care of all the necessary and probably neglected maintenance. For instance, you won't be able to diagnose an electrical problem unless you're certain that the Regulator Rectifier (R/R as you'll see it on here), stator and battery are in good shape.

I purchased my GS850G like a year ago and before trying to diagnose any problems I went through the very comprehensive list BassCliff just gave you. You'll be AMAZED at what POs do (and don't do) to these bikes.

Take your time, don't take shortcuts and you'll be amazed at the difference!
