ok, i got my financial aid check today, and i'm gonna replace these bad puppies.. what bikes should i be looking for them off of? i'm planning on probably buying new, and i believe someone said a newer gs "G" had the same spline.. is it the gsxr1100g?

I think bwringer mentioned some time ago that the really new bikes had the same thing, so look for the Boulevard series or the Volusia series.

.

The harder splines can be found on '81 and older shafties and they're very dark in color. I believe '82 was the year they went to the softer splines, which are light gold in color. New ones ARE interchangeable as I recall, but they are also of the softer metal. When my '83 splines went I replaced them with a perfect "old" one off an '80 GS1000G. Everyone I know whose had this problem has gone to the older, harder splines and never had further trouble.

Regards,

Look for one on Ebay! Buy the wheel with the adapter & just have them send the wheel adapter ????

PART of the 81 model year used the crappy splines too. They (the bad ones) are goldish in colour. The good ones are either black, or the new ones are silver (not any hint of gold) DO NOT buy a gold one, ever...

I can not answer anything about newer designs, if by "newer" you mean recent 10-15 or even 20 years. That sounds like something either bwringer or FocusFrenzy might have made statments about. THose guys (and others) know stuff that I wonder how it is possible that anybody would know something like that.

If by "newer" you mean 23 to 26 years old as opposed to older than 26 years, well then I do have some comments.

My understanding is that the 82-83-ON hub (adapter, whatever, in the wheel) are the softer material than 81 and prior (maybe not all models changed at same time during the 82 model year). I think the idea of the softer hub is that if it is not lubricated then the hub (adpater, whatever in the wheel) wears and not the splines on the drive unit, the hub being the easier part to replace rather than the hub and the drive unit both wearing together. If the newer one is lubricated as it should, it last as long as it should....at least that is my understanding.

I replaced my hub (82 1100GK) a little less than 2 years ago with a current stock replacemnt part (original worn and new one pictured in that pic I posted before). The new one was more silver. And I had lubed with the Honda molly paste. Just a couple weeks ago I had the rear wheel off to replace tire (way over due for a new tire, way over due). Had about 10 thousand miles on that new hub. No visible sign of wear, could not even feel any wear when I felt along the the surface of the spline with a very small screw driver. (notice in picture of my near completly failed one how the wear is not along the entire surface of the spline, so if starting to wear I thought I could feel the boundry from where not wearing to where it does wear).

Not to argue with PlaneCrazy, but my therory is this: After someone has a hub fail or find it to be badly worn (like I did), that they then learn (like I did) about how it needs to be lubed. And then therafter they do properly lube it (like I do now), and then they dont have a repeat failure after that (weither they replace it with a stock one or find a pre 82 harder one).

No argument here ... I agree 100% with Dave's theory. In fact in another thread I mentioned the fact that MANY GS'rs ride with the softer splines without EVER having a problem, and this is absolutely a result of proper lubrication done in a timely fashion throughout the life of the bike.

Regards,

well, the splines currently do not appear to be very worn, and i packed them with a high moly concentrait "assembly grease compound. the gentleman italked to equaited it as similar to the moly 60, and i should be getting some moly 60 any day now from the dealer ( 3 or 4 days, my ass :( ). i guess i'll get a replacement part so i have it ready and waiting, and just see how it goes :).

thanks guys.

Speaking of Honda Moly Lube,I couldn't find any in Memphis last weekend either. Aparrantly Honda has awarded the contract for their Hondaline Brand of Cleaners and Lubricants to a new Mfgr. and there have been some Supply line disruptions. After checking Two different Honda dealers as well as Cycle Gear, I settled for the NAPA Moly paste as well.

I gotta believe the paste is all the same as long as the percentage moly is the equivelent...

To butt in here if I could, can you just throw a little wheel bearing grease in there? I don't think I put anything on mine when I changed the tire. It looked to me like dust could get in there though, since it's not sealed. I don't ride on gravel/dirt very much, but I'm wondering how bad an idea that is.

I've recently noticed an occasional slight vibration from the rear of my bike, usually at a slow speed or in a hard right turn, if I'm remembering right. Sound related to this hub/spline issue?

If you order the spline unit for your bike, you will get one of the "new" (good) ones. The part number has been superceded once or twice since the '80s. They're $85 - $100, depending on where you buy Suzuki parts, and they are silver in color.

In other words, you don't have to go rooting through fiches for newer bikes. The parts ordering systems have already been updated with the new part number.

If you are way-cheap and/or not in a hurry, then you want to find a rear wheel or spline adapter from any 1979 or 1980 GS shaftie. These splines are black in color.

The "soft" splines were found in some 1981 and all 82-83 models. They are gold in color. No matter how well you grease them, they will eventually fail, usually at somewhere between 30,000 - 50,000 miles.

Brand new spline units are easily available and high quality, so don't get too crazy or pay a lot in shipping to get an old one. I generally won't go over $40 or $50 shipped, which is half the cost of a brand new one.

good to know. unfortunatly, i have no idea how many miles are on this bike. i'm really leaning to just replacing it so i know it's done. when i got the bike, there was no tach, the last mileage reading on the title was from 03, but the title was "unknown mileage. given that the splines show little wear, and everything in general on the bike shows little wear, i would hate to find out the hard way that's not the case :P

oh, and redman, i meant from college :P although if i DID know where to get bike financial aid.. there's quite a list of upgrades i want.. :D

You're quite correct. My first GS was a GS850GZ, (1982). My splines failed at 24,000 miles. It was early Sunday morning in 1987 in Harrisonburg, VA.

I replaced the splines with a new set, also gold. The teeth were half worn by 40,000 mile. Good thing I caught it this time.

A friend of mine at that time had a 1979 GS850G, with 50,000 miles plus, and never a spline failure. I found out why. I located a wheel with old splines, and have been using the black old-style splines since then, even on my 1984 GK.

So you're right. I greased the splines and they still failed.

seuadr,
keep the splines lubricated with moly paste and chek for wear whenever you change your rear tyre
the splines wont fail you inbetween the tyre changes if they look ok at the time of the tyre change
the part is readily available and will be for years to come so no need to keep one in the garage
spend money elsewhere me thinks

heh. i was just looking at aftermarket seat covers and foam to update my seat with :P
