    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

82 GS1100GLZ Help with valve adjustment - Please?

I'm 40 mi West of Chicago - South Elgin, IL. I'd like someone to help me (show me) how to adjust the valves. I can trailer the bike to you, or you can come here. I have no "special" tools. I would be glad to pay for your time. Bike has full windjammer without lowers -so I need to know if it needs to come off. I don't think so. Thanks in advance for any consideration.

The tool can be ordered.

on my 80, for the valve cover to removed from the bike, I had to remove the four bolts holding the fairing to the bracket and slide the fairing forward. doing it took all of 15 minutes extra.

it would be a pain to do it otherwise.

The Windjammer will be in the way and make it awkward, but it might be possible to leave it on. It's not hard to remove, might take 5 minutes. There is a plug on the left side near the gas tank, then either four or six bolts that hold the fairing to the mount. Might be easier to take off the gas tank to get to those bolts.

As far as the valve adjustment ... have you gotten your 'official' welcome pack from Basscliff? Sorry if he has not gotten to you yet, but you should really bookmark his website, there is a LOT of good information collected there. You can download a Suzuki manual for your bike. Another item of interest is found down on the left column, called Valve Adjustments (8 Valve). There is also the Zip Tie Supplement. Those two and the factory manual will show you exactly how to adjust your valves. The only "special" tools you will need will be a set of metric feeler gauges and possibly a digital caliper. The feeler gauges are typically less than $10, a digital caliper can be gotten from Harbor Freight for $20. One other tool that can be helpful is free. Look at the bottom line of my signature for information.

Besides the few tools (you will also need an assortment of 10mm wrenches, open-end, socket with extension, etc.) to remove the valve cover, and a gasket. Before you order a gasket, count the number of bolts holding your valve cover down. There was a change made mid-year in 1982 bikes, and the gaskets from one series don't match the other.

The first time through, it will take you a few hours, then you will have to order some shims and wait a few days for them, then maybe another hour to install them. Next time will be quicker, from the third time on, you will only need to allot an hour or so for a valve adjustment. Yes, there will be other times, this is something that needs to be checked every 3-4,000 miles.
