My 82 650 has a couple of problems I was hopin some of you might be able to help me diagnose

First, recently my spedometer has started making a loud buzzing sound that also cause some slight vibration on the spedeometer unit itself after reaching about 15mph. I was given the advice of cleaning and lubricating the speedo cable, and I did so and it did help the buzzing but only slightly, some buzzing does still occur, though sporatically.

any advice?

secondly, when riding, upon reaching around the 4500rpm mark in each gear the throttle handle starts vibrating and the engine seems to get a little rough, but only around the 4500 mark, runs smoothly at lower and higher rpms.

Whatever help ya'll can offer is much appreciated!

Thanks

Tim

One thing is to make sure that the wire inside the cable sheath is seating properly at both ends. It has a square section at both ends that serve to drive the speedo from the front wheel. If it isn't seating properly it may do that.

so if the end that goes into the housing at the wheel looks different than the end that goes into the spedometer look different, is that a bad thing? lol the end that goes in by the wheel has waht looks like a flat head screwdriver insert, and the other end that goes into the speedo is just a bare cable end, (does not have the cap with the flathead insert) Im not sure if I worded that correctly with scientific words and all, but do you understand what im saying?

While you've got the cable out of the speedo...

While you've got the cable out of the speedo...

lube it. Annual maintanence for these bikes calls for lubing speedo/tach cables, as well as brake cables and clutch cable. For better or worse I just stick the straw-end of my fav spray lube and give a good squirt down as best I can.

If the cable isn't lubricated it can break even if its not binding anywhere and seated properly.

Check you PM in a minute, I'll send you something...

Is your bike an "E" or "G" model. There have been a number of threads relating to the GS650 vibrating. And I think all of them are the "G" models. It would be interesting to see if anyone that has a GS650 "E" model has any problem with vibration.

I have the G model, yea I have read through the thread posted by nessism and it seems there are mixed ideas about the vibe, some say its a characteristic, others say its an issue, so im not sure which way to go with it.

Sorry, I screwed up-I was relying on memory, but that's fading as I get older :o. I went out and checked mine and its square at the top (speedo) and has the slotted drive at the wheel. So yours is the same. If its just a bare end (rounded) its probably worn and that may be the problem.

It would seem to me (and I stand to be corrected by those more knowledgeable than myself) that the 650 with the one piece crank and slipper bearings has the vibration and the 650 with the 550 bottom end (roller crank) is the much smoother engine. These two engines even though they are both 650s are totally different motors on the internals.

Update! I used vaseline (from the advice of my fiance's dad) on the speedo cable and its quieter that a mouse! thanks for the advice everyone! One problem down! As far as the second problem, I guess I will follow the advice with the carbs, and other things (as posted in the thread linked above, then give an update on what happens.

Thanks for the advice all!

I've had my 650G for about 1.5 years now. I went from the engine vibrating under different circumstances and conditions, to smooth (how it runs now). Sure, I get some handle bar vibes (barely) when runnin about 70 MPH. new bar ends should cure that....soon to come

what have I done to get her smoothed out

- Listen to the advice of the people here
- I run Lukoil 87 gas in my engine when I can
- checked and adjusted valve clearances (they were ALL out of spec)
- Take apart and clean carbs
- Adjust needles and floats according to stock specs
- SYNCH CARBS (this was the most noticeable help)
- Lose bolt-on rack. ( I still have highway bars that vibe at high speeds)
- Air pressure in tires is correct
- Motorcycle oil 10W-40
- Change final drive oil

Don't believe the hype. These bikes can get smooth.

Thanks Maro, this is the kind of post I was lookin for, I will try all of these things and post outcome to let you know how it goes (this is my first bike, so figuring out how to do all of this may take a little while though lol)

Thanks again!

Not sure where you are located. If I were you, and have never done work on a bike (I was you about 1.5 years ago), I would do the obvious, easy stuff now. Make sure ALL bolts are torqued correct. Change oil. Maybe even run some sea foam through the engine. and enjoy it while it's still nice out. If you have a garage, I would wait till winter to pull the carbs and re-clean. It's not that it's hard, but it's a process for first timers. same as the valves. and **** always go wrong. Plus it sucks waiting for oem parts, shims ,etc. Put bar ends on now to lower the vibes and go go go.

My further inputs...

My further inputs...

I too have an 82 650G, run it with 85 octane gas, cheap 10w40 oil from walmart....NO NOTICEABLE VIBRATION for me from 0-85 mph at any RPM.

I do hear something that sounds like its rattling around, but it seems to be the 650 plates mounted to the side-covers, they're not snug and vibrate with engine RPMs.....

I’ve never owned a 650 but have owned two 550’s, a 450, and currently an 850. Of these bikes, the 850 is clearly the smoothest running. Both 550’s vibrated the same amount and would blur the mirrors and tingle the hands at freeway speeds. 450 would likewise vibrate a fair amount. All of these bikes were tuned properly and ran great. Simple fact is that all engines vibrate to some extent, some more than others.

After participating at the GSR for a few years now, I’ve noticed that most of the complaints about engine vibration are from 1150 and 650 owners. Some people are more sensitive to vibration than others and some bikes vibrate more than others do to production variation. I can’t ever remember anyone commenting about vibration on the 850.

Just sharing information, I have no axe to grind. It seems clear to me that it’s not “hype” that some 650’s tend to vibrate a fair bit. In-line four cylinder engines have harmonic frequencies and the 650’s harmonic falls right at the common freeway cruising speed – 4500 – 5000 rpm. It’s good news that some owners have been able to minimize this vibration through careful engine tuning. That shows that there is hope for those other 650 owners that are experiencing this issue.

Good luck.
