82 GS650E oil filter cover stud or nut is stripped

Help! I just stripped one of the three studs (or maybe just the nut) on the oil filter cover of my 82 GS650E. The nut turns and turns but never tightens or loosens, and oil drips out when I ride it because the cover is not tight enough. Since I can't get the nut off, I'm going to try to use vice grips. Wish me luck!

Does anyone have the part numbers of the stud and nut? bikebandit.com does not list the 82 GS650E on their OEM seach link. Does anyone know if the part numbers for these are the same as the GS750EZ or GS650GZ? Does anyone at least have the dimensions? A friend thinks I can just replace the stud/nut with a 6x20mm bolt.

While I'm at it, does anyone have the part number of the o-ring on the oil filter cover? The o-ring that comes with the Fram filter seems a little narrow, so I've never replaced the o-ring when I've changed the filter.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Alicia

i went through bike bandit from years 78-83 and looked at the 450, 550, 750 and 850

they all seem to use Bike Bandit part # 465559-001

6x20 VWX oil filter stud bolt

Thank you both. I ordered the parts.

I've never used a vice grip before. Should I try to take the nut off first, or take out the bolt with it?

Thanks,
Alicia

Don't know if the stud or acorn nut is stripped. I'd try using the vise grips to crimp the nut on the stud to try to get it to bite and back out. Or, it may crimp on tight enough to back the stud out also.
Remember to use a washer under the acorn nut. Maybe if there wasn't one there, the nut bottomed out and your attempt to tighten it down caused the nut/stud to strip.
When I reinstall mine, I just use a nut driver and try not to "wrench" them down.
Also, if you replace the stud, use a little Loctite red on the engine side.
Let us know how you make out.

I dont put any loctite on those studs when I replace them. The torque on the acorn nut to hold down the oil filter cap is so slight, it isnt needed. I would not advise using RED loctite. If you ever need to replace that stud, you would twist off the 6mm stud before the loctite would release and it would be Hell getting the stud out. If you must, use the blue. Better yet, nothing or a small smear of silicone on the threads

the nuts suck. i had the same happen to me...we used an impact gun and hit it and it pulled the stud out of the block. replaced it with a bolt and some washers.

I've always been able to grip the bare stripped stud with a pair of vice grips and unscrew it from the block.

I found new 6mm studs and nuts at my local Ace hardware store. E-Z!

This seems to happen to all GSs eventually.

Yeah Earl, you're probably right, RED loctite may be a bit much. I tend to use the red on the snowmobile stuff, but there's a lot more vibration going on there. But, I'd still put some BLUE on the case side of the stud.

Yeah, BLUE would be ok. At least you would have a chance of getting it loose. heh heh heh Now if I can just convince everyone to install their oil filter cover using a nutdriver and to stop HONKING those little acorn nuts down to megatons of torque, we can quit having this problem. :-) Only enough torque is needed to be able to compress a thin rubber "O" ring and that isnt much. I put silicone on those threads so the acorn nuts cant vibrate off.
