It CAN be replaced, there is a thread on it here somewhere.
I read through it a long time ago, but right now I have no idea where it is.
I would suggest utilization of the search feature.

Nice to see you putting this much work into bringing a T back to life!

I read the posts on replacing the sight glass. Seems pretty simple and straight forward.

So I got no work done on the bike today. This morning we had torrential downpours, and since I don't have a garage to work in, I was stuck in doors. Plus my wife and I both had the day off again so it was family day. My son is only 16 months old so he can't help me out yet either. But I did take a few pics from yesterday's little bit of work I got to do.

Here is the mess my brake caliper is. Will need to get that piston out some how.

You can see the screw starting to strip in this one. Need to take the impact driver to it and try to get them out that way. If not I have an extractor set that will work. Had to do the same thing for my xvs 1100 m/c.

Horrible looking sight glass.

Brake spindle stuck in old frame. No amount of pounding and penetrating spray would get it free.

Still not much progress

Still not much progress

So not much has been done in the last couple of days. I had a pipe brake in my kitchen so I am still dealing with that. I had to cut up the cabinet and wall under my kitchen sink to get to the offending pipe before the plumber could actually work on it. That took up my day yesterday, and today I go back to work because my vacation is over.

I did buy a few more things off of eBay. I wish I would have held on to more of the original bike when I first got it and began tearing it apart. I need to really clean up more of what I have now and see where that gets me.

I still can't get the piston out of the front brake so that is my next step. And I still need to get the rear brake drum separated from the wheel hub. My next day off isn't unti next Monday but I work days very day but today until then so I should be able to get some work done at night if the weather holds up. I also need to find some space in the house to work on stuff so I don't have to leave it under the carport or crammed into my little shed attached to it. Don't know how the wife will like that though. But so far she is on board with the rebuild and she keeps me going on it. That helps a lot. I will keep updates and pics coming as I get work done.

Thanks in advance for any help, and for those of you actually reading this thread.

Hey my fellow "T" brother,

I'm following updates as I see them appear on my UserCP. Click on it and you will see all the threads you have posted to.

I haven't paid too much attention to my second "T" lately...it's good to have a running first bike at the moment.

Good luck with the rust issues and looking for pics of your work.

Well it's going to be a long haul for sure. I am going to focus on the frame, wheels, & suspension first. Once I am confident those items are solid then I will get to work on the engine. I am going to have to clean the crap out of it. Then all new gaskets, and paint. I have gathered a lot of knowledge from reading all the other rebuild threads so I feel like I can get it all done. Shooting to get it back on the road for next spring.

The frame is actually an 80 750e I believe so there is a little difference in the front motor mount, but not by much from what I can tell. The rear brake setup is a little different, but I believe I can get that to work as well. I'm trying not to keep a list of parts I need, instead just getting what I need when it comes up. That way I can not think about total cost. Denial is great sometimes.

^^Too Funny!

Denial is great...as long as you're happy and can spare the money (wife's gotta be content as well).

My second "T" is waiting for me to tear her down. Right now, I've just been inspecting her inner parts and comparing it to my 1st "T". It's good reference so that I can put her back together when the time comes.

Take your time with her...she will be worth the wait. And it's cool if she's not a "T" because I dig 750s--I'm happy with the power delivery.

Don't forget pics when you feel the need.

I got a couple more parts in the mail today! I'm getting ready to put them on and will take some pics. I also bought a gallon of simple green and a big bottle of Pinsol last night. I think I will try and clean up the engine while it is still in the crap frame since its nice and cradled and mobile since I have it on a caster.

After I got home from work though, I had some more pressing things to take car of...my pipe still isn't fixed. Plumber insisted I take out a cabinet and my countertop.

Got a little done.

Got a little done.

I got a few little things accomplished tonight. A couple of days ago I found my rider pegs and test fit them. They are rusted pretty bad, but it is just surface rust. I need to get some vinegar and soak the rusted stuff I want to reuse. I also mounted up my new to me kickstand, and brake spindle. The kickstand bolt feels loose, and might need a new bolt or the frame mount tapped up a size. Not sure yet. I have '80 rear peg mount plates coming so once I get those and the new oem hardware for the swingarm the rear end will be close to functional.

Here are some pics. Bike related this time.

Hope I bought enough!

Sorry about picture quality, but I have mainly been using my iPhone to take them. I will try and use my actual camera when I can dedicate real time to the project.

I will not complain about any of the rust on my bike(s). Your bike has got to be the MOST rusted bike I've ever seen.

Keep up the good work...there's a nice bike trying to get outta there!

It's something that can get out of hand fast around here. I don't know what the humidity is like in DE, but in a few weeks it will be like walking into a wall when leaving the house. This bike was probably flooded in Katrina too, but I can't be sure. As long as the engine is ok, I don't care.

I lived in Abilene, TX in the mid 90s and drove to Destin, FL in the summer one year. That was a real eye-opener with the humidity! All along the Gulf Coast it was terrible. I don't know how you survive out there--I lived in Phoenix, AZ from 1986-89 and would rather deal with a dry heat.

Hopefully, you find only surface rust on your engine that isn't too threatening. Good luck my GS brother!

There isn't any rust on the engine. The paint is flaking off the rear of the cases, and there is some scale on the aluminum that is exposed, but nothing has jumped out as being horrible in my eye. There is more dirt than anything on it. I need to hit it with the compressor before I really try and clean it up.

Didn't mean to dogg your state but I couldn't help but notice every time I stepped out of the car the sweat was pouring off of me.

Good news about the engine with no rust.

Carbs

Carbs

I got my eBay carbs yesterday. They are from an 850 so I know the jetting will be different. I know everyone says to run the stock air box set up, but since I don't have one I will probably try running pods at first. They at least function, and nothing is stuck on them. The butterflies all work, and none of the slides are stuck. I have them soaking in Pinsol right now.

get a baby bottle brush and give the rack a good scrub while they are soaking, it will loosen up the gunk that is on there, and the babby bottle brush will go between the carb bodies, between the springs and should get most of the crap off....

did you dissassemble the carbs, at least did you take out the diaphgrams before soaking in the PineSol...and use hot water as hot as you can get it.....

.

No I didn't take anything off of them yet. I thought the Pinsol was safe on all the rubber parts. I got the water as hot as I could. I still don't have my stovetop re-installed so I used hot tap water from my washroom sink which is scalding hot.
