    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

hello everyone first post(again i got booted due to inactivity) but I have hopefully an easy question.
My 83 just locked up after putting a couple hundred dollars into it getting it back on the road. I've not had time to tear it down yet but i have a pretty good idea that the head was starved of oil and caused a failure.
The question is if its a head issue (clog due to metal debris or something of that nature) or a cam issue do i rebuild or buy a new complete engine
If it is a head issue what other years will fit? is it only the 83-85? years that ran for that L series? or can i run an older head with little to no modification? Any help would be great and i cant post pictures when i get it apart if anyone is interested.

Why are you assuming a head or cam issue..? Describe how "it locked up" with a little detail to add clues!
 
hey sorry i guess i should have said that. long story short previous owner put an exhaust camshaft due to knocking in the head. they had said there was a ton of scoring on it and had to pry it out. when i fired it up i knew it was knocking but didn't think much of it. Likely because i was just excited to ride and put any sort of reason out of my head. when i was a block from my house it made a metal on metal sound and a screech and shut down. when i went to put the start button it just dimmed the lights and wouldn't turn over. Tried again and it fired for a second and died again. Like i said i get that this post is a bit premature with me not digging threw the engine yet but my day job cuts into motorcycle time haha. Thanks again for any help.

Hopefully your day job is in better shape than this bike sounds....inheriting a previous owners attempts to fix issues requires a thorough check of his work. Assuming all is well is not a good plan as your life is at stake. I don't get a warm fuzzy feeling from your description. My wild quess is that after PO fiddled with exhaust camshaft, he failed to get timing chain tensioner correct and your brief ride caused timing chain to jump causing interference with pistons and valves - but I'm just quessing.
