A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

'83 GS750 - Idles at 5000 rmp

I picked up a 1983 GS750TD that had been stored for 10 years with gas in the tank.

To get it to start, I drained all the gas from the tank and carb bowls, replaced the battery, and put in new spark plugs.

Now it will start (yay!).

Unfortunately, upon starting it will idle normally for about 2 seconds, then quickly ramp up to 5000 rpms, and stay there until I turn it off.

It is at this point that I prefer to seek expert advice, as opposed to just poking around until it works better.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I was told it ran fine before it was stored.

Thoughts? Comments? Insults?

Thanks

Welcome to the site.

First, you absolutely HAVE to take the carbs apart and clean them per the crab cleanup series linked on the main page. There are passages inside the carbs that are probably blocked, and the slides or the enrichener valves may be stuck open that could be causing your high idling problem. You also will have to get a new air filter if you haven't already done that. Get a shop manual. Clymer makes a good one for your bike. Here's one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzu...006QQitemZ160249200456QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

The fact that it started at all after sitting that long without you doing anything to it is pretty amazing. Now if you want it to run right, you have to do those things (along with probably brake pads, new chain and sprockets, tires, etc...) to truly make it safe to ride on the road.

Welcome to the site, Skaz. You'll find all the help you need here to get the bike running again.

Be sure to check the intake boots, the rubber tubes between the carbs and head. They should be flexible and not cracked and the clamps need to be tight or you'll have a vacuum leak.

I agree on pulling the carbs, they need to be cleaned and you should probably put new orings in them (seach the name robert barr). Follow the carb cleaning steps on this site and it really isn't that hard after you do the first one!

Does the throttle work smoothly? Check if you can hear the throttle clicking against the adjuster when you let the throttle snap closed, could be hanging a little on one or more carbs.

Take a look in your tank too, is it full of rust? You might want to install a fuel filter at least until you get a chance to seal the tank if it needs it.

Good luck and welcome!

Great post! Amen brother.[-o<

One other thing. Check the obvious first. The behavior you describe is perfectly normal for that bike if the choke is fully engaged. Make sure that if you push the choke in, the little valve bar on the front of the carb rack is actually moving and closing off the enrichening valves.

Also, check that the idle adjustment screw on the bottom of the carb rack is backed out and not holding the carbs all the way open.

Woah, now BIKES can get crabs?? Sheeesh. Thats the last time I let one of those bar girls ride on *MY* bike i tell ya...hehhe

heh....luckily Crabs have not been a problem with this bike...thus far.

I got lucky on this bike in that it has no rust in the fuel tank, and minimal on the exterior. It starts right up and purrs like a kitten.....just a very very angry kitten.

I have printed off the excellent carb cleaning seminar and will be working through that over the next few days. It would make sense for that to be the issue with the color of gas I was draining out of the bike.

Thank you all for your help and I am looking forward to joining the GS-awesomeness club!
