A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi all. I recently had my starter go out and rebuilt it with the kit recommended here. I got it all hooked back up today but still no cigar. The solenoid clicks but voltage from the battery drops to 4v when I hit the starter button. I initially thought it was a bad battery (it had sat for about a year untouched) so I bought a new one, but same thing. Resistance across commutators was good. Seems like there's a short somewhere, but I'm not sure what next steps would be.

Are you saying the new fully charged battery drops to 4v when you press the starter button? Have you tried to put a decent screwdriver across the solenoid terminals to see if the starter fires up? (Bypassing starter button)
if the starter works then you have a faulty solenoid.
post the results on here.
when you say you had your starter "go out" exactly what do you mean by that ?
It may be the starter is faulty and the repair kit did not fix the problem you could remove the starter fasten it in a vice and connect it directly to the battery to it to see if it runs

Does the starter spin freely when you hook it to a battery with jumper cables? It should kick hard.

And pop the ignition cover on the right off and verify the engine isn't seized try turning the crankshaft clockwise with a 19mm socket.

Some sort of starter clutch issue is possible, too.

This might sound dumb but is the starter cover touching the supply pole on the motor.
I have seen one or two with the pole at twelve o'clock instead of two and seen a motor cover with a hole burned through it.

We had one with the pole at 2 o'clock, but it was touching the cover, anyway.

Had to hammer an outward dent from the inside of the cover to provide clearance for the post. :encouragement:

Well, it turned out to be a short in the new brush kit, thankfully I happened to have a second rebuild kit on hand and it's working now! Thanks for the help! The 8 volt drain had me worried!
