A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Can't tell you where to get the carb dip, or how much it is, your across the pond and this you will need to source out for yourself, same goes for the SS Allen head bolts, I found a local shop here in Canada, that carried almost everything I needed, and some items from the US. You can order some of the ones for the covers over at http://z1enterprises.com/ they have full kits already pre packaged, and probably other items you might need...

You can run the clearances on the bench, it will be easier than working around the frame. Somewhere down the road you will want to pull the fork tubes again and replace the oil.

That's good news about the valves Billy that should make things easier and based on the fact that I was going to check the valves anyway it seems like another reason to get the engine out and on the bench. Looks like I need to stop putting off the inevitable and strip the frame completely.:D That's me trying to put a brave face on it! In terms of the forks, just to be clear, are you saying I should pull them and replace the oil and seals now because I'll have to do anyway some time down the road? Thanks again for your advice.

If the seals don't look like they are weeping leave them alone and just replace the fork oil.

Billy you're way ahead of me! I downloaded the manuals from BassCliff's brilliant website so it shouldn't be a problem. In my heart I know I should pull the engine and forks - I just can't wait to be on the road as I'm without transport and relying on public transport. Though I suppose a few more days isn't going to hurt is it! The thing I fear most is getting stuck or disheartened by taking on too much and not finishing the job.

Valves definitely getting checked. If I pull the engine can I check clearances when it's on the bench?

I have an additional 750 / 700 supplemental service manual for your bike you can have it for the price of shipping if your interested...

Thanks GateKeeper, on your advice I've found a couple of suppliers on the web so I just need to work out the measurements and I'm sorted! Haven't found any pre-packaged kits yet but you never know, I might get lucky!

Billy that is music to my ears! Where would they be weeping from if they were? I can take a couple of pictures and show you if you don't mind?

Thanks for the offer Joe, I've downloaded a PDF of the supplemental manual from BassCliff's website as well as the main one. Don't count me out though as that's a generous offer and it's always easier to work from a hard copy, no? Let me see how I get on with the PDF and get back to you on that one... Out of interest, any idea what the shipping cost would be roughly? Thanks again sir!

When you compress the forks if you don't see oil left behind on the fork tubes the seals are most likely good.

Well, just tried compressing them and although they are definitely not weeping, where the forks go into the tubes there is a very light coating of oil. Is this ok/normal?

A very light coat left behind is fine. If you start seeing it collect high on the tubes as the forks do their job when riding then it's excessive.

Wow, GateKeeper you have made my day! I'm straight on this tomorrow and ordering them. Thank you so much!

To all who have been posting advice and info on this thread, thank you! It means a lot to feel the support of the GSR community here and is giving me the extra zip to get this baby stripped down and built back up quick-smart.

no problem....

Haha! GateKeeper I'm just looking! (has to be the third time now...) On another note, did you replace your valve cover bolts? A couple of mine are pitted with rust spots:

fortunately for me, mine were in very descent shape, so I had no need to have them replaced, or the need to try and find some....

fill them in with some metal epoxy, like JB Weld or similar, and paint them black....

it all depends on how you want things to look in the end....polished, painted, etc....

Thanks again SVSooke for your invaluable knowledge sir! The American brands are mostly imported and consequently are too expensive here. What do you think about something like this: http://www.toolstation.com/shop/p62311?
Under give it a try.If you don't like it chose another brand till you find one you do.Friends in Aus have had good luck with Yamalube carb cleaner from the Yamaha dealers.Yamaha Canada doesn't stock it of course but they might over there. I find one I could get here that works but stinks REALLY bad.
