    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

86 GS450L Carb Problem

So here's yet another carb post... but I'd be very thankful for any help. I just purchased an 86 GS450L that wasn't running due to the carbs. I just tore them down, cleaned and put it back together. Now the bike will start but only for 10-30 seconds before stalling. I can't give it throttle or it stalls. Sometimes it will rev high when I start it and stall immidiately afterwards. I can start it up again right away. There is also gas leaking into the air box.

So here is what I think... floats/needle valve are either no good or out of adjustment and there is a vacuum problem somewhere in the system. The bike runs until it can't pull enough fuel anymore due to a lack of vacuum and stalls.

Any comment or suggestions? Has anyone had a similar problem? Thanks.

Also I have specs for float height... does anyone know what the standard reference point to measure from is?
 
Have you tried running it with the petcock in the Prime position? You may have a bad diaphragm in the petcock or you are not getting enough vacuum. After a long time, I have found the best way to get my GFs GS650 started is to start it on Prime and then turn to On after it starts.
 
I tried that a little... didn't make much difference... but I'll try it longer tonight... I might take the tank back off and check out the petcock just to be sure

i have the same exact problem with my 81 450...i took the carb off to clean it....now its a pain in the rear to get those intake gaskets back on the carb and back into the airbox and then not have a leak....look at my replies on my original post and see if there is anything there that will help....

Measure from the gasket surface to the top of the float. Make sure all gasket material is cleaned from surface to ensure an accurate measurement.

Sounds like what my GS 450 did when I started it without the vac line to the petcock connected. Man I scare myself sometimes. And to think I used to be an airplane mechanic. 8O Scary.
 
I took the petcock apart last night to see if the vacuum line was working properly. The spring steel on the diaphram was flat so I bent it out a bit... not sure if its to spec. Do you know where I can get a replacement diaphram? Everywhere I look they only sell the whole petcock and not a rebuild kit for it.
 
Sweet... thanks! I found it... but it costs $23! Might as well spend the extra $10 and get a whole new petcock... great site though... Im going to look through it for other things
