The Skunk http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=176156 Needs a new chain.Going to do a 530 for the obvious benefits of that. I know the stock gearing is 15-42.What front and rear 530 sprockets should I get to be close to that? Noticed on Z1's conversion thing that you can do larger 530 sprockets.I can't seem to figure out that Gearing Commander thing.:oops:

Greg if you email Z1 about it they will send you back a TON of info, well worth the email.

Getting the gear ratio is simple.. Just divide the rear sprocket # of teeth by the front sprocket teeth..

I did 48/17 is a 2.82 ratio

Stock 630 is 42/15 2.8 ratio..

47/17 is a 2.76 ratio.

Chain length is easy to convert. multiply the number of 630 links (96) by 1.2 to get your 530 length.. 115.2.. round up or down..
114 link chain should do the trick. I got a 116 and almost didn't have enough adjuster to tighten it up.

reason for the shorter chain is your sprockets are smaller.. you could use equal size sprockets but 18/50 or 51 sprockets are hard to find.

Bikemaster = generic

My opinion is to buy a known high quality brand chain.

You also still need the 6mm spacer for the front sprocket
Part: Chain and Sprocket Kit
Make: Suzuki
Model: GS1000
Year: 1978-1979
O.E.M.Gearing 15-42
Front Sprocket: 18T
Rear Sprocket: 50T
Chain/Links: Bikemaster O Ring Chain 530-106
Note: Requires bushing 24-9325

Z1 has the spacer

Everything you need on one page at Z1
http://www.z1enterprises.com/catalog.aspx?pid=GS1000C-1978-MP1
Looks like it will cost about $39 more with shipping ( $151 for parts $43 to ship) through Z1 but that includes the spacer and a better RK X ring chain.

So going though my GS750 parts I looked at this sprocket

It's 43T.To worn for a new chain? Got a 48T as well.

43? You sure it's a 530 sprocket? Typically you'll need more teeth on a 530 than a 630 for gearing close to stock.

I would go with a 17 front btw...that way you can go up or down on the rear without changing chain length. And, I dunno if it was simply a bad sprocket, but the last 530-18 tooth I bought from Z1 wasn't very good in the spec dept...with the spacer they sent, there were no threads left, and without the spacer there was slop side to side on the spline. It wasn't their normal distributer iirc (JT) so I don't blame them. But beware if you do go with an 18.

Yes its a 43T 530 sprocket,stock size for a 83 GS750E.Says 43-530 on it,This is the 17T front I got from Katman:
2011_11120003.jpg

This combination would be taller than stock but my 85 750 ef is running a 15(one up from stock14) and a 40T rear 3 down.I like it.May loss a bit of low end zip but not enogh to worry me.

Just an equation to figure out a 530 conversion. take the number of teeth or links divide by 5 and then multiply by 6

Less work.. # of teeth x 1.2

As for the ratio
17/43 would give you a 2.52 ratio.. Stock 15/42 is 2.8

Your 85 750 with 15/40 is 2.66
to get that ratio with your new gear you'll want 17/45

630 to a 530

630 to a 530

Has any one done the change over for a 80 GS750E yet? Gonna need a new chain soon and thought I would inquire if someone has done it yet to save some time. Thanks

Just done a conversion on my gs750L which uses same frame stamped gs750e ,picked up a new old spares 530 xring chain and 15/43 sprocket kit cheap.did a small amount of calculating and figured I could just squeeze in a 16 tooth front with the 110 link chain and had to turn a 3mm spacer for the front sprocket.Rivet the chain and remove and relube the s/arm bearings while fitting chain. No rubbing problems and no snatch/noise ,just need to fit scott oiler.
Though higher geared than stock 15/41(17" rear wheel) and a little lower than was fitted 15/38 its great not having change gear' just screw on the throttle and go.

82 GS 1100EZ 530 conversion

82 GS 1100EZ 530 conversion

I'm working on my 82 1100 EZ and am converting to the 530 chain, replacing both the front and rear sprockets. After comparing the physical size of the rear 530 sprocket to the oem 630, the 530 is obviously smaller in diameter. But the front is also smaller in diameter. If the final drive ratio is determined by the number of teeth on the front as compared to the rear and that number stays the same as stock; 15 front, 42 rear, isn't the final drive ratio the same at 2.80 regardless of whether it's a 530 or 630 chain? Am I missing something? By the way I was told there would be no math in this rebuild.:)
This site has been a remarkable source of information throughout the process by the way.

Keith

The ratio is the ratio. 15/42 is the same regardless of the chain size. One turn on the front sprocket advances the chain by 15 teeth, while 42 teeth on the rear sprocket makes one turn. It doesn't matter what is the chain size or the tooth size so long as they are engaged in the same media.

15 tooth drive gear to a 42 tooth driven is the same ratio as with the chain.

Yes, the ratio is the same. But the 530 sprocket will be smaller diameter, which allows the chain to move closer to the swingarm and possibly hit it as slack develops in the chain. Also, with a small front sprocket there are friction losses compared to a larger sprocket since the chain doesn't have to turn as tightly so to speak.

indeed.... 15:42 is the same as 16:45 and is the same as 17:48 ish.

reason, as mention, to go larger on the front is that a 15T 530 is very close and can easily knock and/or scrape on the swingarm due to it's smaller diameter. So, to counteract that folk change up on the front (and down on the back to retain the correct ratio) to ensure the swingarm stays out of harms way.

depending on what you ride and/or how you ride it it may be a good time to go taller or shorter on the gearing too. if you like going out on runs on nice sunny mornings for breakfast then to save fuel you may choose to go smaller on the back to get better fuel consumption... if you see yourself as the next race star off the lights then go bigger on the back. down to you. look in your respective service manual and it'll tell you the ratio your 630 had when it came from the factory, then go from there.
