A Little Tour in My Back Yard

what camera and mount set up are you using?

A strap around my neck and my left hand :D. Don't have a camera mount. I just try to hold the camera level with the bikes attitude (level with the handle bars). It makes for some fun times when leaning way over in a corner! :)

The camera I am using is a Panasonic FZ-20, so it is a larger camera as well. It normally takes much better pictures, but it was very overcast/raining that day.

sweet, another local for the sept "Let's go ride in the snow" ride

nice work, but maybe stopping to take the pics...? I thought that car had just barely missed you in the first couple!!

I saw a guy that had modified a camera case to have a hole for the lense, then strapped it around the lower guard on his full face to take movies, but that doesn't help for stills without a remote...

nice tho, looking forward to the next installment! (oh, and yes, four links per post, even smilies count. but of course they are why Frank made the limit in the first place)

ride on!! :D

Great pics! CO has always been on my list of places to visit but I haven't made it happen yet. You've given me further incentive. Nice to know there are still beautiful places with little traffic. My area has little traffic and is mildly beautiful in its own ways, but our roads are pretty straight and those mountain views beat our hills ;)

Nice!

Looks just like Ohio, except for ,

well....the scenery...^o

LMAO!!!!! Too true :D

I like your ride report; pictures of the road and pictures of the ride.
"Ride Report": report on the ride, pictures of the ride.

Yes, do more.

.

So here's the plan for today. I'm going to be riding up through a small, tight side canyon and into the Poudre Canyon. This ride will be about 140 miles and will be mostly curves, so it will take a while. Since I have a small tank, I'm heading out to buy a 1 gal. gas can to make sure I have enough along for the ride.

After a good lunch of Roast Beef with roasted potatoes and carrots, I'll be off.

Hope the weather cooperates this time.

Well, it was a 5 hour 160 mile ride today, twisty canyon riding almost the whole way! That little 1 gal. gas take worked great, sure am glad I bought it (my tank only lasts roughly 125 miles (on 2.5 gal.)).

So here we are, me and my trusty steed ready to ride. See I told you I dwarf the poor little GS. It gets the job done though! ( you can see some extra foam peeking out of the after market pad, trying to get the seat a little higher)

Making my way down to Masonville, pretty small town, only has a church, and two stores.

Wouldn't you know it, the weather is starting to change. This made for some not so great pictures as I had my camera set up wrong.

Aug24086.jpg

Here's Stove Prairie, one of the oldest schools in the area. It is still an active school for the locals. (didn't get a shot of the original log building)

Aug24087.jpg

I didn't get one good shot of stove prairie canyon (they all turned out blurry. I need to get a simple small point and shoot for these trips as my camera has alot of dials/buttons and is large, so it is pretty easy to change settings accidentally.

Well, heading up 14 into Poudre Canyon

Here's Profile Rock, aptly named

Aug240810.jpg

Heading up to Cameron Pass, roughly 11,000 ft. at its highest point on the highway. This is a GREAT area with a lot of camping/hiking/fishing you name it areas. There are tons of small and large lakes in the area (a lot 4x4 accessible only) as well as streams and the Poudre river, all which have excellent trout fishing.

Aug240812.jpg

Oh yeah, it rained, again. I guess I need to start these rides in the morning instead of the afternoon. I'll get better pictures and stay dry

Aug240813.jpg

Here's the turn off at Cameron Pass. Some good hiking trails are located here. The little GS does a great job in these high mountains. At 11,000 ft. the engine is running strong and smooth. (I still can't wait to get a V-Strom though)

Aug240814.jpg

I went a little further and decided to turn around at this point (my backside and legs were starting to feel the cramped conditions).

Aug240815.jpg

Still some snow above timberline

Saw a large doe just after this sign grazing on the roads shoulder, couldn't get the camera up in time though (sign says "Watch for Wildlife")

Aug240819.jpg

Small tunnel in the mountain (camera on the wrong setting again!)

Aug240820.jpg

Remember the sign last week about "open range"? I came around a corner and had to stop quickly. There were a couple of large bovines walking across the road (didn't get a pic) so I had to sit there for a minute or so. There were 50 or so head of cattle grazing along the shoulder and chewing their cud on the road. Here's one:

Out of Poudre Canyon heading for 287.

Aug240822.jpg

Heading south on 287 going into Fort Collins. This mountain always reminds me of the scene in Independence Day of the large alien ship crashed somewhere in Africa.

Aug240823.jpg

Some thunderheads forming east of town, tornado warnings on the radio.

Aug240824.jpg

Back at home, had to charge the camera to get this pic. The camera was on for about 5 hours so the battery died.

Well that's it for this weekend's ride. I need to work on my picture shooting some. I guess it would be better to stop along the way to take better, more interesting pictures instead of shooting blind on the move and hoping they turn out.

Great stuff. You've put the steel to us old mate.Don't know about the photo's on the move, but going to have to give it a go.Maybe get Mumma Bear to take them from the pillion seat?:-k Cheers,Simon.

Great pics! Love every one of them.

One quick question, if your speedo's main reading is in kilometers, does that mean the mileage also reads in kilometers? Meaning you have 21,881 kilometers and went 158 kilometers on your trip? Just curious.

If that's the case, it might be why it seems like you're only getting 125 miles to your 2.5 gallon tank. Perhaps you're really getting closer to 200 as 125 miles converts to about 201 kilometers.

No it is reading in miles, the kilometer reading is just for the small inner numbers on the speedo.

125 miles works out to 50 m.p.g. which is very good, considering how I ride and the elevations I ride at (kinda heavy on the throttle). It just has limited range because of the "L" models very small tank.

Yes, great pics!

Am already looking forward to seeing next week's ride!

That's cool. Now that I look a little closer, I do see the mph is larger and bolder....not to mention the conversion isn't right for what I was thinking.

It was just one of those "Hmm..." moments. LOL!

By the way, can't complain about 50 mpg.
