    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

a paint question: spray hardware

hi all,

the wife and i have been doing a bit of painting around the house lately, which made her think maybe we need a 'power painter". my quesiton is this....

would a hvlp setup suitable for painting bikes also be suitable for painting around the house? or, to put it another way, could i buy a spray setup for painting bikes, but somehow get the fund acquisition by calling it a rig for painting the house?^o:-k

Nonsense. Use an old-school deVilbis . . . the overspray arould the house will add a nice getto-shiek look to the place
 
As long as you can thin the paint it would work just fine to paint anything. Just make sure to completely clean the gun. O and also make sure to tape up everything because overspray is a pain to get off.
 
IT could work but house paint is much thicker than paint you would use on your bike, you would have to thin it our beyond what its purpose is. the thickness is why you would use house paint on your home to help protect it. seems you might be better off rolling paint on your bike instead of lphv
 
My largest HVLP gun is for primer and still wouldn't shoot house paint.
 
I've done a fair amount of research on this, and it appears if you are willing to thin it enough, it should work. I am not sure that I would want to paint an interior room with one, but a friend and I are going to give it a shot on his garage fascia and gutters sometime soon.
 
thin it enough and the drywall will just absorb it. u are better off with a pressure pot but your never gonna find a happy medium. just get a spray gun for the bike and rollers for the house. do it right or not at all.
 
So just applying an insane amount of layers of thinned paint wouldn't accomplish the same thing?
 
You can go to someplace like Harbor Freight and get a cheap gun with a big tip for practically nothing...you can also pick up a decent paint gun for less than 50 bux. Detail guns are great for bike parts. I do all my painting, including clear coats with a detail gun that I paid 75 dollars for. Works beautifully. 400 dollar guns are nice, but unless you're doing it every day professionally, there's no need for a really expensive gun.
 
It won't work to your satisfaction. Go get a roller or a cheapo latex spray gun.

Latex paint for houses etc. love airless sprayers. They compress the paint and shoot it out of a normal looking spray gun with a hose going to it. Don't spray any of your body parts as the paint comes out at HIGH pressure. I don't remember the pressure of my Binks but it puts out 3/4 gallon/minute! Needless to say I throttle back on that one. Home Depot have hobbist models that won't give you sticker shock. HVLP sprayers are great too but need paint like Imron and be aimed at your bikes fuel tank.
 
good info guys. i wondered what the diff was between the good ol wagner power painters and a hvlp gun was, i guess i coulda figured it out on my own! thanks all!
