ok the '79 GS 1000 I purchased last Sept. Ran great, I parked it in early Dec. still running great. Went to go for a ride today and it wouldn't run on 1 and 3... 2 and 4 pipes was hot 2 and 3 pipes was cold. Pulled plugs out and all 4 need replaced black and carboned up, but 1 and 3 were worse than the other two. It has foam Uni filters on it, filters on 2 and 4 were coverd in a red liquid, filters on 1 and 3 were dry would that be the cause of the plugs fouling out that bad. I checked the spark by putting a new plug in each plug wire and turning it over. Nice bright spark on each cylinder. I'm off to by new plugs, but was wondering about the Uni Filters. Anyone have any experience with them. Like I said it ran great and I'm sure it will run great again with new plugs. Just wondering if there is something I shjould do with the filters. Thanks Dave

I dont know it you know but the red stuff on the filter was the uni oil that you are supposed to spray on. I would try new plugs and it that doesnt work take the carbs out and see what the dillio is.

Good luck
Jake

I have the foam Uni pod filters on my '79 Thou as well. I have had good luck with them so far, no complaints. What is that red stuff that was on the filters? Filter oil? Could be your carbs, but after only a month, give or take, the bike should still run correctly. I would clean the filters, spray a light coating of filter oil on them (not too much), and then replace those plugs and fire up again. If you are still having issues, it may be your carbs after all. In the future, I recommend running Sta-bil in your fuel tank (use the type designed for watercraft as it is designed to negate the effect of Ethenol, and it still is recommended for cars, trucks, etc.). Let us know what happens!

I put new plugs in and cleaned the UNI Filters, haven't resprayed them with filter oil yet but fired the bike up and it runs on all 4 cylinders again. Plugs 1 and 3 were really fouled bad so no wonder it wouldn't run on them. I was just wondering if those 2 filters not having as much oil on them as the other two could cause it to foul those plugs faster than the other 2.

K&N filter oil is red.
Sounds like the pods were over oiled and you fouled out the plugs.

One would think the opposite would happen....too much oil = fouled plug. :-k

I know that when I over-oiled my K&N's once, I lost my top end. She would bog down.

Ok so before I take it out for a ride I'll lightly oil all four pods, Only a few more weeks till riding weather.
