A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So here is the back story...

1980 GS550E

Basically i have a great set of VM carbs and boots but the bike is supposed to have CV carbs. I want to ask if anyone knows of a way to make them work instead of getting a whole new set of carbs and boots...

are there any adapters i can buy? (long shot i know) or more likely, some sort of adapter i can make or someone can make for me?

thanks in advance everyone, the bike has a few other issues and Im worried i just bought a Lemon...:mad::mad:

I have only known of adapters back in the day that allowed you to adapt VM carbs to CV intake manifolds. Never knew of anything going the other way though. may have to pony up for some CV intakes. And whats up with that washer on the one flange???

the P.O. ghetto rigged the carb setup. the rest of the bike isnt too bad but all of the intake boots have fender washers on them because they are too small. i dont care about aesthetics i just want them to work right...

Even if i got new intake boots for the correct CV carbs, the wrong VM carbs that i have wouldnt match up with the boots. So i would have to either make an adapter or get a whole new set of CV carbs and probably have to rebuild them... I'm really wanting to use the ones i have.. both the boots and carbs are in great shape so i hate to get rid of them.

wait! i just re-read and caught what you said and thats exactly what i need! i HAVE VM carbs... but they should be CV's so if there are adapters that allow the VM's to go onto the CV intake manifold thats perfect!

Chuck, he is not going the other way. He wants to do what I highlighted.

Does anyone know if the intake boots for my 1980 550E would be the same as intake boots on a 850 or 1100? or are all the boots different sizes? because if so, i may have an adapter idea...

No, they are not the same.

Not sure about the port size on the head, but the '79 and older 550s had VM carbs.

What size VMs do you have?

.

I'm not sure, how can you identify them?
