    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Adjusting timing on Dyna S

Finally got the bike to idle today and even rode it around the yard a time or two. Backfires on occasion and has horrible throttle response. Idles decently.

Anyway, I set the Dyna for 1-4 per instructions but the notch for 2-3 isn't even in the window. I continued to adjust the right module per directions to adjust 2-3 timing but mark is still way off. At least its close now. I adjusted the module as far as it can go. How can I get 2-3 timing set without impacting 1-4. Is it okay to reset the 1-4 module? Thanks guys
 
Did you read the Dyna instructions on how to time the two triggers (1-4 & 2-3) independently? Read that & then come back. Ray.
 
I don't understand what you mean independently. If you are talking about static timing, I had done that. However, my test light would stay illuminated for probably 1/2" of travel. Both tested fine statically

With the timing a zero degrees, you can see teh upper mark fire looking at plug 1 or 4. To see the 2-3 timing use that high tension plug.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what you are saying. I'm new to these ignition systems. Can you explain it in noob terms please? :o
 
Well there is more than one way to do it and I can't say I read the Dyna directions (that i remember).

However there are some fundamentals through.

The left coil fires 1-4
The right coil fires 2-3

When the left is firing at the top, the right coil is firing at the bottom.

On the dyna there are little allen screws to allow the left pickup (for the left coil) to be adjusted independent of the right pickup for the right coil.

So the idea is first to get the left and right to both fire at Top Dead Center (TDC) and Bottom Dead Center (BDC) using the marks on the advancer.

Step #1 Connect timing light to 1-4 coil; adjust timing to zero (The "T" at the top of the of the ignition).

Step #2 Conenct the timing light to 2-3 coil and insure that the timing mark at the bottom of the timing cover is right. Adjust the right dyna pickup till the 2-3 coil mark a(at BDC) is aligned. Tighten the allen screw

Step #3 Reconenct to coil 1-4 and Set the timing as per factory to the mark labled "F" (at the top).


What you will have accomplished with step #1 and #2 is to insure that the two dyna pickups are exactly 180 degrees out as per the timing marks "T" and the lower one.

Then Step #3 aligns the 1-4 to the upper factory "F" and the assumption is that coil 2-3 will maintain the same offset (which it does).

I hope I got this right.

Quick question. My test light stays lit through both the timing and firing marks for 1-4. Is this a bad thing? For whatever reason, no matter what I adjust on the dyna, it still passes the static test.
 
You need to make sure the marks are lined up when the light first kicks on.
 
I had the same problem as Mr. Toga when installing the dyna s yesterday...I followed posplayr instructions and it worked like a charm...you guys are great.
