are there any gauges out there that are more "old school" than our clusters? i actually took mine off and sold it, but im looking for older looking gauges to put in their place. just two mechanical gauges in cup, mounted on the triple.

after a little research, i found our tach drives are 1.4 ratio, the same as some other japanese bikes. in that case, maybe an older model kaw, hon, yam pair of clocks maybe be the route to take.

im going for a minimalist approach. any help is appreciated.

Just get a couple of those mini gauges from MikesXS.com or someplace like that. Those seem to be what all the "cafe" doods are going with.

Strip yours and simply use the cups and bracket. Paint em up or something. That way you're positive of tach and speedo ratios. Just a suggestion. Ive always personally liked the look of the OLD Honda separate cups, but they arent compatable with the zooks.

and am i crazy, or is my speedo on my 79gs1k mechanical? there is a cable coming from my front wheel.

exactly what i want. bummer.

there WAS a cat on here for a while that found some place that sold chrome cups and bonnets that would fit our gauges, but i havent seen him on here in a while. He had a thread about it not TOO long ago. Do a search, it might come up.

unfortunately, i do not care for chrome. at all.

i took your advice, searched around a bit, but didnt find it or him. but i did find some bandit GSF400 gauges that i like quite a bit. but i think they are electronic (at least for spedo) and mine speedo/tach are both cable driven to my knowledge.

i went to the bike salvage today without any money, on purpose.

i found a baller set of gauges for a 72 t500 that i might go back and get. they wanted 75 for them which i thought was a little steep, but man they were nice, and would look perfect for what im doing.

i also came across a headlight for an 83 1100 that was probably 10" in diameter and used an h4 bulb. i wanted to pick it up, but i could only find the headlight and trim ring, no bucket. spoke with the guy at the desk, and he said if he had a bucket for that light, he could get 300 for it. i about fell over.

its actually 8inch glass. Those are COVETED highly prized. I happen to have TWO :P Tho i think one's glass and reflector are crap. And yeah, he could reasonably get about 150 or so for it in a hot second. If you go back, Id be interested in the headlight and ring!!!

that thing was awesome, but i think he was awfully proud of it. ill go back tomorrow or friday, whats a reasonable price for it? did you really want it if i can swing it? i found a bucket to accept it, but the bolt holes from ring/mount to bucket didnt line up, the ring mounts were maybe 1/4" wider. it was written in marker on the light "83.2 1100E".

For just the glass and the ring (really i only need the glass, but what the hell) Id only pay bout $40 or so MAX for it. The whole assembly, in good condition, is worth a goodly bit, and they arent all that available, as, fortunately, not TOO many of these get parted to the sticks...but i see em for 150 on the regular complete on ebay, and they go for it too.

ill ask, but he sounded awfully proud of it. i found a few yama headlights that i thought were cool and big, until i saw that bad boy.

cool, but i want something larger. 4" maybe.

Use your original gauges, if you disassemble them you will find the two gauges mount to the bracket and will stand freely without the original surround. Since most of the instruments are orange, cover them or as I did, paint them.

Other option is that the L bikes are separate gauges in chrome cups with the warning lights and fuel gauge as a separate unit in between. They might provide parts for the look you want.

I've seen complete 8" assemblies go for $50 or so on Ebay. You just need to know which models used them and be patient. The '85 700E uses the same headlight. There is one Yamaha model that uses an 8" too. Christmas is a good time to watch Ebay for good deals. People are cash strapped and auctions don't do real well for the few days right around Christmas.

You'll love clubmans. Especially compared to drag bars. Best swap from one bar to next I ever made. On topic j.c. Whitney sell some clean guages that I even considered, still thinking about the tach. Don't remember off hand what size they are but there bright and shinny. Also self contained, little tab mounts em up.
So what happened to the hardtail ? Different bike or new direction? Cafe is probably a much better use of all that power. Or at least I think. Let's see some pics. This is the "appearance" forum. Kidding of course but we do love bike porn don't we?

ive always loved cafe bikes. glad i didnt go hardtail, i just wanted the bike to sit lower and was having issues locating shorter shocks for the GS. the bike is basically a basketcase right now. everything is unplugged, ive sold off all the stuff i didnt want/need, and it has no tank or seat. ive got to do some chopping to get the backbone to resemble a single downtube so i can get my goofy tank to fit. hopefully ill have it sorted out by spring.
