With help from Tom and others on the website I'm getting close to finishing my 1981 GS650G. I need an aftermarket ignition module and would like to know which one to get and who usually has it for the best price.

Thanks,
Tony

I may very well have a spare '81 650G ignitor around here. Get a hold of me in case you don't go the dyna ignition route and I will dig around in the back shed. Where are you located on this blue marble?

Ontario Canada. Near Niagara Falls. I'd be interested for the right price. Found a new Dynatek unit on eBay for $115USD shipped to canada.

That's a good deal. But I seem to recall that the oil sending unit might slightly interfere with the dyna plate, so double check clearances if/when you mount it.

thanks Tom. I now know what you meant by the oil sending unit in the way. I removed it and installed a 1/8" NPT plug so I could get the timing plate installed without modifying it. Now I'm wondering how others wired up the Dyna-S unit to the coils. The wires don't reach but I still have the plug from the OEM ignition module. What wires go where? Does anything extra need to be grounded?

Also wondering what, if any, issues will I see after removing the oil sending unit.

thanks again,
Tony

Can you post pic of the dyna plate showing interference with oil sending unit area ? Others with 650's have done this with a slight modification, but maybe dyna has changed things a bit.
Personally, I'd want to have an indicating oil light, especially since the shaft 650 uses plain bearings and needs high pressure oil delivered -best to be forewarned!
I'm not familiar with dyna wires, but their unit still needs the orange/white power wire (from kill switch) delivered.Someone knowledgeable will chime in.

I guess I can notch it. I'll have o relocate the one wire retaining clip then. It looks like I'll also have to run the correct wire from the old harness.

If no one gets back to me about the wiring I'll just use alligator clips until everything works and then hardwire it all.

Yeah notch it, use spacers, whatever. Did you google dyna ignition for hints on wire orientation?

So it looks like wiring is as follows:
orange/white for 12v power
black/white for ground
Black/yellow for 2&3 coil
white for 1&4 coils

ill notch the timing plate and run the oil pressure sensor wire beside it after heat shrinking it all together. Any other suggestions from others? Please chime in.

Thanks,
tony

Yes, that's right. But ,for future reference, how do the wire colors on dyna module connect to those.

I haven't found much help online. I'll post pictures of alterations when I'm finished. Hopefully everything works out. I want this thing to start moving!!

I'm having problems posting pictures but will shortly.

I made a sub-harness from the old non-functional igniter. Works great and means I don't have to worry about using the splicing device that can be unreliable.

All cylinders have spark now, but my issue is timing. Cylinder 1/4 was easy using the advance timing mark (about 1/2" from the F line) but I can't see the same line for 2/3. Any assistance is appreciated.

It'll run with the assistance of 'Quick Start' to get it going.

Thanks,
Tony

My issue is I only see the following lines:
T1-4
F1-4
Advance Line
T2-3

Advice?

Get creative! "F" for 2 and 3 is 180 degrees from "F" mark for 1 and 4 -ditto for their respective full advance . Maybe use kid's protractor to locate/scribe the full advance for 2 and 3
recall the old plateimage.jpg

It's alive!!! Muahahaha!

just needs a tachometer cable and probably a rectifier.
