DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Air filter/box question

I am looking at replacing the seat on my 81 750L with a handmade fiberglass one.
My question is, can I replace the filter housing with something custom built? The original one will not allow the clearance I need for the seat to sit flat.
Possibly use a K&N replacement and make a housing for it to go into.

Sure

Sure

Sure, I can't imagine why not and I think it would work perfectly well. I think you'll want to make it as roomy as possible and make sure it allows enough air to get sucked in. Beyond that, I don't think your bike will ever "know" the difference!:-D

You can but you may have a fun time, getting things set correctly, once it's back together. These are a finicky fuel mixture machine (very lean from the factory) and air flow/leaks, even tiny ones, make a huge difference on the performance. When things are too lean...you'll see flat spots in the 3-5K range, with a floating idle. Too rich (rarely the case) and you'll know it! Good luck.

I took a foam filter and stuck it where the airbox filter box above the battery is suppose to go. I've eliminated the filter box, and have more room above the battery. with the stock carbs on my 81 GS 750E I do not notice any performance change. The only thing is the pod filter is just stuck in there, the plastic air manifold is hard plastic, so a hose clamp won't work to help hold it on, I've gone over some reall bumpy roads, and the single filter doesn't fall out.

Thanks for the info. The airbox on mine is such a strange shape, it is hard to get in and out. The previous owner had tore it up over time, so it already has extra holes in it.

my airbox was tore up also by the P.O. so i went and got a fiberglass kit from the auto parts store, and re-fiberglased the "extra holes". sanded them down to make the repair blend in better, i didn't bother with paint, for no one will see that. at worst i think it may yellow some with age.
