Hey,

So I figured out, through another post, that I am missing my air filter cage for my 82 850G. Anyone know where I can get one?

If you order an OE filter and you will get the cage. Failing that, you could try the Wanted forum here. That's how I got one.:)

I ordered one through my dealer the other day; not sure if it'll be the right thing when it arrives.

The fisch is incredibly unclear about the parts, as are the names that the fisch has stored. So...who knows. There was a $50 part and $25 part, which apparently order the same thing. I got the $25 one(s?).

I didn't order anything. This is how I got the bike. I see the assembly costs $50+ but can't bring myself to pay that much when I want to go to pods and a 4-1 soon. Any other options?

Yea, go 4:1 and pods NOW.

Why so urgent? Have you had good luck with that setup? I really need more words of encouragement to drop the cash...

I'm personally NOT going with a 4:1 and pods because of the jetting issues I've heard of.

Though, I might be convinced at a later date to toy around with them. Currently, reliability is a huge factor for me.

I've heard that with a dynojet stage 3 kit, it is pretty reliable and takes the guess work out of jetting. Heck, sounds good to me.

Hi Mr. Skyboy8950,

Running without an air filter will make your engine run very lean. A lean running engine can run very hot. A hot running engine can burn valves and worse.

What kind of air filter are you using? Are your carbs properly jetted?

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

If you still have the original exhaust, stick with the original airbox and filter setup. A stock 850 that's running right is sooooooo sweet.

And yeah, the $50-ish part is the air filter with the cage. The $25-ish part is just the foam.

If the exhaust has already been (or needs to be) replaced with a noisy aftermarket alternative, then it's up to you. Might as well rejet just once.

To each their own of course but I don’t like pods and headers; makes the bike noisy which seems less refined to me.

Regarding the air filter, in checking Alpha Sport it seems pretty clear what the part number is:

Part# 13780-49070 Desc: FILTER,AIR CLEA Price 52.78

If you go to Flat Out Cycle the price will be less. A drop-in K&N is quite a bit cheaper but you need to come up with a filter cage. No worry that a K&N will flow too much air and mess up the jetting.

Good luck.

Currently I just have a UNI foam filter floating around in the airbox. It wasn't even oiled.

When it comes to 4-1, pods and a jet kit, please view my post in performance mods. I'm debating. I would like a louder bike. Kinda fun. But please help me decide what to do. I am torn.

So I called UNI on Monday and talked with a tech guy. He had no clue that the filters for our bikes needed a cage. Being a good guy, he said he would look into the situation because they do not provide a cage.

I thought he gave up...

He just called me. He told me that he is going to order an OEM cage and filter and see what it is. He then said that they might start producing a cage! If anything, he was going to make the situation right for me and anyone down the road.

Before I got his phone call, I put an order in for and OEM filter. Everyone has told me that there are two part numbers for the filter; one being the element and one being the element and cage. For my 82 850G, there is only the filter. I'm wondering if they moved away from the cage on my bike. Either way, what I have now is wrong and what is coming to me in the future is right.

Phew...

I hope we don't have this problem in the future. I'll keep you guys up to date as I talk to UNI.

The 82 850 does have a cage, and it's different from the early 850 cage - has a spring clip instead of a screw tab. I know this because my 850 was missing it's filter and I went around and around getting a cage to install a K&N in the airbox. And sorry to sound negative but don't hold your breath regarding Uni tooling up to make a cage, particularly since K&N doesn't provide one and most people swapping over to a Uni/K&N, already have the cage.

Hope you find what you need and good luck.

Like I told him, I already sunk $50 in a new filter... If he wants to make that up to me some other way, well, make checks payable to...

And pulls hard all the way to the redline! (and beyond :) )
my opinion, a stock 850 is fine the way it is.
Agreed, and if anyone should know about squeezing every little bit of power out of a stock 850, its Brian Wringer. You really should see him ride sometime, its quite the site to behold. I got to see it once, for about a .10 of a mile....
