    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Air filter cleaner/oil?

I'm posting this question here since the air filter is related to carbs and fuel, as air is an essential part of both. If IO need to post in a different forum, let me know.

My question is what cleaner and oil to use on my polyurethane(foam) Uni filter for my 1982 850L. The owner's manual simply says to wash using a "non flammible cleaner" and then to dip it in "oil". Well, that is very, very vague. So, what I have on hand is Kaboom which is kinda like Simple Green. Will that work? And I have some 10W-30, Transmission oil, 2 stroke oil, olive oil, canola oil, etc. These are all oils but I'm willing to bet that some of them are not recommended.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Is there somethging specific that I should go buy?

Hi,

Yes, I wash my UNI filter in Simple Green. Fill a shallow pan, just enough to cover the filter, with a mild solution of SG. Let it soak for a while. Then give it a hand wash and rinse. Don't wring the filter to squeeze the water out. You don't want to distort it. Just press it gently between paper towels and then let it air dry.

The easiest oil to use is the K&N aerosol spray oil. All it takes is a light spritzing. You can also use regular motor oil, dab it on with a rag and rub it into the foam a little. It doesn't take much.

K&N has a product called a "Recharger Kit" which has a cleaning solution and spray oil. I haven't used the cleaning stuff much but I do use the spray oil.

I used to wash my foam filter is warm water and dish soap and then soak em in motor oil. Squeezed out as much oil as I could and off you go.

I went ahead and washed the filter with the Kaboom cleaner. I'm letting it dry, and then I'll just use the 10W-30 that I have available.

Now, I'm off to get some weather stripping to seal the airbox. My filter frame already has stripping on the bottom side of the frame, but not on the top. Should I put some on the top too?

I thought I would let everyone know that I cleaned and oiled my filter, and it solved one of the problems that the bike had.

There was a "dead spot" in my throttle, and so I figured I was looking at cleaning the carbs or replacing the jets. Well, I cleaned, and oiled my filter, and sealed the airbox and filter with weather stripping, still not air tight but close enough. So we had a dry day here in Western Washington last weekend and I went riding and the "dead spot" was gone! No more hesitation when accelerating, and boy does that bike get up and go. So, I will now never underestimate the importance of the air filter and box.
