Air filter help

Hey guys I have been looking for some air pods that fit the 85 GS550 L dual throttle body. 2 carbs on this model. Well with no luck I decided to fab up some air pods myself. I tried to keep the air flow very close to the stock air box. The bike runs ok with a little sputter but my biggest issue is that sometimes when the throttle is released the engine is still reving up. Does this mean too much air or too much gas. I figured it was too much gas so I blocked some of the air through the custom pod and the bike ran worse and still reved high after throttle released. I am starting to think I need to go back and make up some ne air pods a little different. I made up a generic drawing of what I am using so you guys could give some input. maybe they are too small. One other thing is that when cold it will not start even with the choke on. I either have to use starting fluid or cover one of the pods with my hand blocking the air. Weird I know. This is my first GS. I have had many custom bikes and done my share of customizing but this one has me beat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an issue with either a pinhole in the slide diaphragm(s) OR a throttle cable hanging up, to me.

Hi,

Normally a rising idle indicates an air leak in the intake system, or too much air. How are your carb intake boots and intake O-rings?

With your custom fabricated pod filters, it seems you can either vary the air intake volume or re-jet the carbs as necessary for proper operation. Plug chops should help you figure out the right combination. This is interesting stuff. Can you post a picture of the pod filters you made? Please keep us informed.

Hey Cliff, I'm thinking he means that when he's got the right grip twisted and goes to hit another gear, the RPM's continu to hold or climb.

At least that is how I read it... :-k

Yes Cliff. When I remove my hand from th throttle it does release. The throttle on the handlbar and the throttle on the carb are not sticking. They close as they should but the engine will still rev very high and/or sometimes it will come back down to a normal idle but it takes a few minutes. I will get up some pics later when I am back home.
