A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

hi, i just got my replacement UNI air filter in the mail for my 82 gs1100gl. it says to oil the filter before using, i didnt anticipate on this and i really dont feel like waiting to order oil online. is there anything around the house i could use to substitute for it, or if i even need to use any at all. thanks.

Hi,

Motor oil is fine. Be careful not to over-oil. I picked up a K&N "Recharger" kit from my local auto parts store.

But you can buy just the aerosol oil. For cleaning the filter just use Simple Green. Put some Simple Green and water in a deep flat pan, just enough to cover your filter. Let it soak for 10 minutes. Rinse with a hose spraying from the inside of the filter towards the outside, pushing all the contaminants out of the filter. Let it air dry, then reinstall. I have two air filters which I alternate. I take out the dirty one, install the clean one. Then wash the dirty one to get it ready for next time.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

I want to stress that only a light application of oil is needed and I mean light!

I got some bel-ray foam oil from my local dealer for about $8.

I use the cheapest motor oil available - $2/quart.

Regarding concerns about over oiling, I’ve heard members here mention this before but I have never experienced any issues using the following method: dump motor oil on the filter – about 3-4 tablespoons worth or so, squeeze the filter until the oil is distributed all over, and then use paper towel to blot out the excess. Just did this yesterday with a Uni filter for my 850. Took the bike out for a ride and it runs great. I had a K&N filter in the airbox previously and the spark plugs are white as a ghost. By all accounts I over oiled the K&N so hoping the Uni makes the bike run richer, although it ran fine regardless.

An over oiled filter will make it run Richer. You just want a light film for the dust to stick too.
K-N filter oil is different than foam filter oil.
I use PJ-1 FOAM FILTER OIL spray or similar.
If none around I use 2 cycle oil.
