So currently I have one of those small cheapo pod filters before the stock airbox. It sits behind the side cover with a hole drilled in the panel.

I recently picked up a bit larger K&N to replace the cheapo since it is really dirty and kind of falling apart. So I swapped them out and went for a ride. ran fine till I opened er up and it just bogged. Put the smaller/dirtier filter back on and the side cover back on and it ran good again.

So I was just curious if it maybe had anything to do with the side cover being off and the filter more exposed in the test run that it got too much air or just the larger filter in general bringing in too much air. Since the filter is a bit larger I didn't feel like cutting the hole in the panel to compensate until I knew if it would work or not. But if it might work if the side cover was back on I will go ahead and make the hole larger and give it a shot. The filter is similar to this one for size...

Thoughts?

The side cover could've played 99% part in the issue.

After the filter swap... put the side covers back on, and see how she runs. If it still bogs, you may have to balance your screws a little on the carbs.

Your dirty airfilter was restricting airflow enough to richen the mixture. Once you put the clean filter on, all the extra air leaned it out, causing the power loss. To my mind, it indicates that the carbs are set up way too lean and you are losing out on a lot of performance.

I think I'll try this first before re jetting. Since I did the mono shock the bracing makes it a real pain to get the carbs out because everything is sooo tight in there.

So May need to back the air screws out or in?

You don't have "air screws", you have "idle mixture adjustment screws".

Turning them out will richen your IDLE mixture, but will not do anything to help your bogging when you turn up the throttle.
For help there, you need to re-jet with the MAIN jets, not the IDLE mixture.

.

ok, i thought they were only for idle, but wasn't sure. Thanks

Guess I'll be pullin the carbs off and finding out what I have for main jets and try going up a size.

My bike has CV carbs and won't run worth crap with pods. I use a stock air box with a K&N filter and it pulls HARD up to a tick over 9000 RPM.

Yeah I still have the stock air box. Im just playing with the filter on the outside of that. I think I'll try putting the side cover on with the new filter and see if it runs better. But if im missing out on some hp gains because my carbs are set too lean. I would love a bit more kick. Maybe it has a bit to do with the home made exhaust too. :) Tried to keep it something similar to stock. But who knows.

Be prepared to go more than one size, depending on what you find.

If you have stock jets in there now, you might want about 4 or 5 sizes largen than stock.

If you also have a 4 into 1 exhaust system, you will want another 2 or 3 sizes larger, for a total of 6 to 8 sizes larger than stock.

Oh, you will probably have to raise the needles a bit, too.

Yep, get used to pulling those carbs, :D

.

no worries. I will do it if I have to. :) Thanks for the jet sizing info. I will hopefully pull them off this weekend and find out whats in there and report back. the exhaust is still a 4-2 with same size pipe diameter, the mufflers may be a bit shorter though. but there is still baffles in them. If I can get a bit more punch out of this ol girl it will just make my smile that much bigger each time I ride. :)

Would it be beneficial to get a dynojet kit? or just get some jets by them selves. that option would be much cheaper.

With the Dynojet kit, you do get larger jets, but the real money there is for the needles.

They have a LOT different taper, and several slots so you can adjust the height.

.

so recommend the dynojet kit. Then I have lots to play with? go with stage 3 kit?

Yes Dynojet kit. Buy the ST3 kit. Will have stage one in it too. You'll be somewhere in between.

Did you oil the KN filter By the way?

well that will play a big part too, k&n with no oil is bad, too much flow not enough filtration

good to know. I will get some oil. I did put it back on today and got the panel fitting. But had to tape up most of the filter for the bike to run right. Will try oiling and see how much that changes it. The filter isn't brand new, got it from another person. But it does feel pretty dry. Anyway every bit behind the panel is taped. Only the showing part is the open part.
