A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi there, I had a look at my air filter. It is bone dry. Do I need to oil it lightly? I remember reading it somewhere

Here are some pic of what it looks like

Clean it first then add it and a little motor oil in baggie- squeeze it till it appears lightly saturated.

I have two 850's and I have found that I need to keep the filters well oiled and well sealed in the airbox otherwise I run too lean. The bikes run great with oiled filter and lean and unhappy with no oil.

Really stupid question.... How often do the air filters need to be oiled ?

Personally, I would oil at start of summer and maybe mid summer...but my particular configuration tends to run a bit lean and this helps significantly. So minimum every spring...and maybe two or three times through the summer. But depends on how much you drive and also if you have an issue with being too lean as it helps richen your mix

BTW...when I rebuilt my first GS, I did a ton of work on it and I was at wits end because I just couldnt get it running right...I had seen posts on the importance of oiling the air filter and making sure the box was well sealed but I just didnt believe it was that important. In the end I remember sitting in my living room thinking that before I tore it all down again I was going to go out and oil it. So I did. I soaked it, squeezed it out, but I left it pretty heavy with oil...I remember driving it down the road and thinking "wow, it is running nice"...so I got on the highway ramp...and up to that I had only ridin my bike a couple miles at a time because I hated had it ran...it was lean and surged and idled high...so I got on the ramp and hammered it...redline in second, redline in third and I remember yelling into my helmet "hell yeah!".

So that's my story...oil it up and be amazed.
