Air Filters

im in need to replace my air filter in my 82 gs1100gk the foam on it and around it is starting to disintegrate.my question is the a stock filter from bike bandit is 51$ plus shipping and there is ones on ebay that are k&n that say they are for my bike but the dont have a cage like around them and are lil cheaper with free shipping. do i need the metal cage like the stock filter or does the k&n fit in tight enough to not bounce around.im really not prepared to pay 60$ for a filter.. and if i use the k&n stock filter will it screw up my carbs?

Hi Mr. ny_redneck04,

I use that exact same air filter on my bike. Well, actually, I just took it off and installed my Uni (foam) filter. After I clean the K&N I'll put it back on. I alternate between the two filters, depending on which one has been cleaned. I don't notice any difference in the way my bike runs between the two filters.

The K&N fits over my "cage" assembly and then the "holder" plate screws back in to hold the filter on the cage. I should have taken a couple of pictures when I had it off last night.

I've had to use some weather stripping to get my airbox sealed up good. Check my website for a pictorial guide from Mr. Roostabunny.

just wondering what you mean by bolting up to the filter..my filter just seems to sit in the air box and be a lil snug and not really sure if i clean of the original filter that the new filter will fit over it buttttttttt ill take your word for it lol thank you sir

Hi Mr. ny_redneck04,

So you've gotten it all figured out? The air filter fits over a metal "cage" and is held onto the "cage" by a plate, actually a rectangular frame, with two screws on the under side. The top is a wire mesh. Once you have the filter in place and properly screwed on, the whole assembly slides into the airbox and snugs up against the top.

The air filter assembly is different on some bikes. Hopefully ours are alike and I'm not causing you too much confusion.

I've used a Uni filter for many years. About $20. Works great.

I actually have two -- one comes out and gets a bath, and the other goes right in so I don't have to wait for the dirty one to dry.

that is i believe whats on the bike now its just foam. is it oil bathed ?? where do i get one ?

wow imagine that i looked on uni filter site and i found it damn i just need to stop typing before i look stuff up
