A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Air mixture screw on VM carb #2

On carbs number 1, 3 and 4 I get a good reaction when I set the air mixture screws. For instance, when I dial them right down, the engine will bog down and virtually stall. But with carb #2, there is hardly any noticable change in idle when I bottom out the air mix.
The spark plug is good in #2 (as is the spark). Any ideas???

Don't worry about the lack of response, set the screw the same as the other carbs and you should be fine.

There is a possiblity that the tip is broken off, but if it is running OK, don't worry about it.

The broken tip problem on VM carbs is the fuel screw. If it's broken off there will be no fuel flow since the tip plugs the orifice.

Could be that your pilot circuit on no 2 is blocked - you can still get a GS550 to tickover (reasonably) well if it is blocked. Why on a 550? Layout of the 'double' pilot jet circuit? I don't think so but it is peculiar to the 550 and there's 'owt else different with the other bikes. Works on some 550s but not others:confused: even with a good synch.

2 easy ways to test: if you've got a Colortune pop the glass spark plug in no.2 and see if it's firing consistently on tickover. Or start the bike from cold on tickover only, if it will, and put your hand on the exhaust - the ouch test - to see if it's as warm as the others.

I would say that carbs grubby, take them too and strip them all right down and give the ma complete clean out before you even consider tuning.
