All the gear all the time

It was the right side of my bike that suffered the worst damage too, even though as far as I could tell from the collateral damage mine did an endo before coming to rest. I guess we've got our own little "shame" club here now, but the good part of it is ATGATT works. BassCliff was dressed right, I was dressed right and so were you, Bruce. All three of these accidents were on curves, and all of us knew better, yada, yada, yada............................

Dang Bruce glad your ok, hats off for wearing your gear. Saved me back in March. I don't get on with out it period.

Damn, that sucks! Glad that you're OK tho Bruce. If ya need, I have a spare MC like that, with lever, and a mirror or set of, if you'd like em. Just pay for the ride there and they're yours my friend.

Thank you so much for your offer. I should be OK. I have a few more skunks to steal parts from. :)

I need pants, I only wear denim. What's cheap and good and online? I'm a canuck.

Have a look at riding pants at newenough.com. Not sure what the shipping situation is to Canada... Same as anyhting else, I suppose. I like my mesh pants over shorts. Cooler than denim, but protected. Susceptible to mesh-rash, apparently.

My mesh overpants don't do a good job of holding the knee armor in place. Pants not meant to go over other clothes can have a better fit and do a better job on that. My solution was to take the knee armor out and put in some cheap motocross armor that straps directly to my leg. It definitely stays where it needs to be, offers more protection around the knee, and covers the shin too. Warmer though. Still cooler than denim.

Cheap...is not good. Sorry. You'll get your money's worth when it does it's job.

If newenough.com doesn't work for you (because of the shipping), try the next motorcycle show in your area. The bigger shows always have vendors with racks of gear. Looks for closeouts.

+1 on the NewEnough.com recommendation. I got an email from them (I've subscribed to their email list) a few months ago and I picked up a pair of these on closeout for $169: http://www.newenough.com/closeouts/bargain_basement/fieldsheer/sport_leather_motorcyclepants.html

Before that I was wearing my two-piece leather suit. Before that, JEANS, which are simply no protection in a slide. I just have a change of clothes when I get to the office and I'm good to go! Although, sometimes I don't even rush to change as these pants are so comfortable.

Whatever you do, don't wait to get protection. Get something now. You can get the perfect thing later on when you find it.

Best of luck!

Actually, the mystery man is me....

Condolences on the mishap. Congrats on comin' through relatively well. Well done on the ATGATT! Glad it did it's job and helped ya out.

Best of luck with the healin' and repairin'.

From Newenough if you play their closeouts & are not too fussy it's possible to go from Helmet to boots for about

$60-100 Helmet
$60-100 Jacket
$60-100 Pants
$60-120 Boots.
$15-$40 gloves.

Of course you can also play the odd sizes etc...

If I was to wear all my cheapest gear:

$65 Icon Alliance Helmet (NE)
$37 Fieldsheer Textile Jacket (Bikebandit this one)
$30 Joe Rocket Cargo pants with Hip armour & Knee armour (NE)
$15 Joe Rocket or Power Gear or Icon gloves (NE) Any of these pairs were $15. I have a few pairs of gloves...
$22 Joe Rocket Touring Boots

Total $169

The bandages at the hospital could cost triple that..

Of course full price on that lot would be around $550 so it pays to shop around.

Thx for the newenough.com advice, I'll check it out.

I should share this thread with my wife. When she rides on the back of my GS, she wears a leather jacket, doc martins, and gloves (not ideal, but a big step up from most passengers I see). But she'll jump on her 50cc honda spree to get milk wearing sandles, lululemon pants and workout top, no gloves. Sexy yes, safe no.

Someone at the rally suggested I do a write-up and send pics to AGV (my helmet manufacturer) and tell them how happy I am with their product, etc., etc. Maybe they'll give me a new one. :)

AVG might be one of the ones with a crash replacement policy.... :)

I just ordered a lid from here http://raceparts212.com/ they're super cheap, supposed to be going out of business... hope it's not a scam. It's a bonafied Yahoo small business web site, secure checkout etc. If it is I'll get Visa to sort it out.... :) Will report back.

Yea Ill be buying the gear before the registration. Ill just leave the bike in the garage till then.

Here is a question...does anyone wear extra armor under leathers? Is it just overkill? Something like this...

You don't need that under full leathers or good textiles... maybe a back brace.

That would be good under street clothes or riding in the dirt I would think..

Dan :)

Couldn't hurt to wear that

I've been thinking about something similar as my leather jacket predates armor (22 years old)

Bruce, really sorry to hear about your misfortune, and extremely glad you weren't hurt worse than you were. ATGATT can sometimes be inconvenient, but since ANYBODY can take a spill, prepared is the only reasonable course. Glad your bike wasn't any worse. The old saying about two types of riders, those who've been down, and those that haven't YET, says it all. My brother took a spill about 35 years ago, a week after getting a new Shoei full-face helmet, and took a chunk out of the helmet on a curb. He'd either be dead, or we'd be watering him. Right then, I vowed NEVER to ride without a helmet, and the good folks here at the GSR have convinced me long ago that I need all the protection I can get. That sneaky gravel IS trying to get us, and when experienced, shrewd riders fall prey, we ALL should take heed. I hope you're feeling better soon, and hope to come out to NV and ride with you sometime.

The shirt armour is good under a jacket that doesn't have any built in but there are some drawbacks. I have a Knox shirt that fits kind of skin tight like the one illustrated likely would. Fine to keep you warm but no good for summer riding or in warm climates. They are meant to wear under a jacket tight to the body so they can get sweaty.

I prefer jackets with attached armour as I don't feel so constricted. I do wear it in the colder weather under the black leather as I'm wearing in my avatar pic.. That shot was taken a couple of Februarys back when temps were in the minus but we had no snow. I just had a Tshirt under the Knox and I was toasty.

I think elbow pads and a back protector would be more than ample for most situations.

Cheers,
Spyug

Bruce,

I just wanted to say that I'm glad you were ATGATT and you're OK, well, not too bad off anyway. Rest up and heal. Feel better soon.

All the best to you and yours,

Cliff

When I was looking for a new riding jacket, I came across a various jackets. Some looked cooler than others, BUT I also had to keep in mind about the DOD regs for my base. So I finally picked up a Jacket from motorcycle-superstore.com that met the regs. This jacket has the spine, elbow, and shoulder pads for added protection. I love this jacket and wear it 90% of the time (5% I'll admitt I just wear a hoodie or shirt, the other 5% I wear my leather jacket). So far I've been lucky enough NOT to eat it taking a turn or anything.

On another note, the thing that makes me scratch my head is when I see kids on sport bikes and the only protection, besides a full face (if they are wearing one), is just the spine armor. Really? Ya look like a tool.
