A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Just thought I post up a picture or two of my almost finished cafe project. I guess this could be posted in the performance section too as the performance has defintely been improved. Turned out pretty good for a ragged out '78 GS550 :-D See what ya think?

Good looking bike! Dosent look like that seat is gonna be good for anything mre that a brief run to the store...... But it looks good!

The seat and tires is the only things left to complete. Need to get some foam and a get the seat covered and a new set of shoes put on it and it'll be ready for summer.

Thanks,
cm

How's the sound with a straight pipe like that? Do you have any baffling at all? Bike looks good...very radical.

No baffles yet. It sounds really good and mellow up to about 5000 rpm as long as you don't get into the throttle. But after that it sounds like it should be on a drag strip. Way to loud. I am going to get a set of those slide in baffles and see what that does. I may end up having to get a set of slip ons or something. But for now I am going to try the baffles.

nice looking bike!! just a quick question... by the look of the engine and the carbs it doesn't look like a '78. Did you end up switching the engine? Just curious. Once you get the seat all done, it should look awesome... have you thought into a 4 to 1 exhaust?

See the this post. It expains what is going on with the engine and things.

I thought about a 4 into 1, but I wanted to keep alittle bit of the vintage look going on with 2 pipes. It would have been easy enough since I pieced the one on there together anyway. But, for now, I will keep the 2 pipes. Might even put me some big megaphones on there from one of my parts bikes.
Have a good one,

Great looking 550! Those brake rotors look expensive! I dig the tank.

Thanks, I hammered the tank myself. Turned out pretty good for spray bomb paint.:-D

for the seat foam a great cheap(free at carpet store dumpster) option is to go with 2 or 3 layers of carpet padding. just glue it together however many thicknesses you want, and shape it with a flap wheel on an angle grinder.
also: junk seat, foam kickboard(swimming), kneeling pad for gardening,

Very nice. When I was doing mine I thought about a red frame with black tins. I didn't end up tearing it down to the frame, so I opted to keep the frame black.

It's nice to see someone do it, and that it worked out so well.

Nice seat covering project.

The plans I have for the seat are probably to take somewhere and get one of those snap on covers made for it. The one like you see on all of the pre-made cafe tail sections. The cover on mine has to be removable. Under the seat pan is where all the electrics and such is and the tail section is a permenent fixture of the bike. So the cover itself must be removable so I can take the pan off and access the wiring if need be. Anyway, thanks for the comments.

On a side note. Put some new tires on yesterday and finally got to take it up the road for a real test ride. This thing hauls! It doesn't way hardly anything with all that power? The engine didn't blow and I don't have any oil leaks after a few trips to readline (13,000 rpm).\\:D/ So now all I need is a tag (and mufflers and a seat) and were ready to go.
