So I've decided to adapt some .30 cal ammo cans as hard saddlebags. These cans have a waterproof gasket, can easily be modified to accept a lock, and are much cheaper, even after all work needed, than the cheapest hard bags. Down side, rather small and seem fairly heavy. This is what I have so far, just painted the boxes up. For the interests of experimentation, used all-purpose gloss black metal paint applied with a roller. If works well, may get another pair and spray with automotive. These look pretty bad in the flash, but the paint looks alright, just not as flat as sprayed. Still needs some last touching up, and has been in closet getting dusty while i plan mounting bracket.
Wallet inside, for relative size. Large enough for me, need locking hard bag for pistol transport.
Below i have a picture of an 850GL with my planned mounting points on the bike:
My question is, how would you recommend making a bracket to mount these? I was going to order some rectangular tubing and somehow make a frame (don't know how to weld, but could learn and have access to MIG welder) Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
