DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

An eventful day.

Yesterday was interesting. I had new Bridgestone S11's put on the bike in the morning. Coming from the oversized cheap tires that were on there, it is a new bike! They are stickier, lighter to spin up, and have added much needed braking traction, (that comes into play later.)

I left work at about 6 yesterday night on the bike. I have been really trying to hit the basics after not riding for some years. Things like flowing through corners, smooth shifting techniques, and general riding skills. With the old tires, I could brake pretty hard. The front end dives pretty bad, (springs are on the winter project list,) but other than that it's not a big thing. I mountain bike as much as I can, and handling and braking skills transfer easily to motorbiking. After the new tires were on, rode some easy corners to break them in a bit. I rode about 30 miles and was coming home on a local 4 lane highway. It's 55mph, and generally pretty low traffic. As I passed the local Evil Cub store, (big box supermarket,) a lady was merging onto the road along side me. There was no traffic behind her or I. As she started to merge, no signal light. As she entered the right lane, no turning of the head. I was already covering the brakes, and started to back off a bit. Without warning or signal, she swerves very quickly into my lane. I hit the brakes hard, as I've been practicing, and the tires gripped remarkably well. I had time to get out of the way, but it still happened very quickly. Had I not been watching her anticipating an action like this, she would have plowed right into me. After I had established that I had safely cleared her path, I hit the horn hard. She then whirled her head around, slammed on her brakes, (almost causing me to hit her a second time,) and just looked terrified. She had to be about 55 or so, and looked shocked and then mad at me as I passed. Like I had anything to do with it!! I shrugged my shoulders at her and went by.

I was a bit shaken up, even though I was ready for it. I saw that she pulled into the local ice rink and I thought about talking to her about it. Nicely of course. With a second glance I thought better of it. If after driving for that long she doesn't practice good driving habits, I wasn't going to change her.

So yeah, I'm apparently not allowed to post on the "Safe Riding Tips," thread yet, but here's another reminder to practice stopping and be aware. They are all trying to kill you. Cheers,
Ben.

But for the Grace of God...

But for the Grace of God...

Mr. benwitt11,

Thanks for sharing you experience. You've given us another good example of "anticipating the (un)expected" and how to ride like you're invisible.

The only thing I would have done differently in this scenario is NOT use my horn when you did. As you found out, it merely startled the driver and almost caused another "accident". I try to use my horn as a warning device to try and avoid an accident, not as a punishment after a close call.

Make no mistake, I do use my horn when necessary. And I'd love to go "road rage" on a few drivers. But I've pretty much given up on trying to "teach" anything to all the cagers who cross my path. Some get it, most don't and won't. So I just avoid them and let them go on and have their little altercation with someone else. I don't need the drama in my life.

I'm glad you and the old lady are OK. Let's be safe out there.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

It's just a little script that shows part of the information that must be exchanged between computers on the internet in order to communicate. This shows your "external" IP address. Some private networks and Internet Service Providers use NAT (Network Address Translation) to share a few IP addresses with many users (many "internal" addresses using one "external" address - the "external" address being the one that the internet sees). You may see your internal address when you use the 'ipconfig' command at a command prompt. But if you go to a website like http://www.ipaddressworld.com you will see your "external" address. This is what is shown in the danasoft.com script in my sig. It's not harmful, I can't see your address. It just displays it back to you.

I could use a promiscuous sniffer program to analyze your packets and find your internal address inside one of your external address packets, but I'm not that kind of hacker. :-D

My "internal" IP address is 192.x.x.x, but this script shows a totally different "external" IP for me. I have 5 computers on my private internal network sharing one external IP address.

OK, that's enough. Geek off!

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Actually, your internal address is 192.168.x.x
Just a thought.

Warning: this thread has been hi-jacked....

Hi, Mr. Bass Cliff,
Let it be cordially known to you that you are an accomplice in hi-jacking an otherwise innocent thread.....

. I expected the moderator in training, Mr. Gnaht to inform of your serious transgression, but he must be secretly enjoying the geek hi-jack process.
What is this forum coming to?????? OH, woe is us.........

Mr. DanTheMan,

I didn't start the hijacking, but I was an accomplice. I admit it. I'm guilty as charged. Go ahead, confiscate my pocket protector. :(

Be warned, Mr. Bass Cliff, that as an accomplice, not only your pocket protecter, but your much coveted antique slide rule and up to 750 posts may be confiscated by Mr. Gnaht if he ever catches wind of this odious offence on the forum............Just thought I would give fair warning, since I still have more posts than you, and less odious offences. I've seen screen names disappear without warning........
BTW, what was this thread about?????????:-|:-D

Uh, I think it was about honking your horn and scaring old ladies.

It's funny how you can sense when people will do that. Impossible to explain. If I can I wave at them. Not a go-ahead wave or a how-are-you-nice-to-see-you wave but a stop-spacing-out wave. With fully extended spread-out fingers. Seems to work.

My conclusion from this thread is that when endangered on the road by a reckless little old lady driver, the most effective means of of punishment the rider can dole out is to threaten to expose her IP address.
You learn something every day. I never would have thought of that. :-)

It might be worthwhile adding this item to the project list...

http://www.bikerhiway.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=74

To be used preemptively, as Bass recommends....be warned, there is no way you can toot this horn and not sound rude, so even a preemptive strike is punishment enough\\:D/...though not for you, if you are the type accustomed to a quick 'goodbye' toot every time you leave the driveway.....the neighbors might not be amused 8-[.
BTW, shop around (ebay etc) to get a way better price than that listed.

Tony.
