Another Charging Issue

ALRIGHT,

Another charging issue... which has been plaguing the bike for some time.

Reg/Rec has been replaced with high end brand (name escapes me at the moment), Stator was purchased and installed before I new the difference between a good and bad brand... I think it got good reviews back when I was purchasing it, spent around $30-45 on it I believe.

The issue is riding the bike over long periods of time - went on a ride for about 1 hr and 40 min. About 45 min in I watched the charge drop from 15-16 to 14-15, then about an hour in charge dropped down to 11-12 and near dying.

I was able to make it home the additional 30 min by turning the headlight off. I noticed the voltage drop when using blinkers as well, but it seemed to be able to recover but never climb above the 12 once the headlight was turned off. An added fun part was it was down-pouring half way through the ride...

To say the least, I hate electrical... not my forte. Some of the insights I have gotten thus far are either bad stator or bad wires. Would the wires to start with be those which are connected to the battery to the Reg/Rec and the headlight? What would I be looking for when I test?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge around electrical things... and thanks so much for your help!

15-16 volts is over charging. You might have burnt up the stator. You can find the specs in the service manual for your bike but typically 14.5 volts is the max safe voltage.

Standard rule of thumb is to purchase a SH775 and rewire your charging system to bypass the factory wiring. There is a simplified wiring schematic available which shows how to wire the system. Do this and if the charging system voltage is still low you have a junked stator. A high grade stator such as those sold by Rick's costs about $150.

Thanks for the quick response! I thought I had read ~14v was the max. So this means my reg/rec is not doing its job - this would be my third one I believe... Thought the one on there now was from DBs... but I really can't remember and can't find the receipt.

Looking back I wish I would have done more research on the stator option, but that was almost 5 years ago now, what I wish I knew.

Oh and, if I am running 16v and progressively dying after a long ride but once the headlight is turned off its able to maintain, this would be a sign the stator was putting out that much voltage and therefore frying perhaps the battery? How does the reg/rec work to keep the stator from running that high?

I have had problems with blowing headlights in the past - no issue this time?

the regulator/rec has inbuilt electronics built in and should not allow more than 14.5 dc output. The stator produces AC voltage the rectifier then converts that to DC voltage.
As all ready said get yourself a SH775 reg/rec ( be careful that you do not get a copy there's a lot about) bypass the Oem wiring if you do that and the charging is not correct then it's mr stator time.
There is a simple explanation of the wiring here post 1 https://www.thegsresources.com/_for...-SH775-Install-Diagram&highlight=Sh775+wiring
This is what I did
This is using the Triumph link lead

Triumph part# T2500676. http://www.2wheelpros.com/oem-parts/triumph-link-lead-regulator-t2500676-part.html

Cut off the two small plugs then carefully split the harness so you have one plug with two brown and two black wires twist the Browns together likewise with the blacks so you now have a plug with one brown and one black so to speak.
The brown connects to the red wire in the bikes harness where the original rectifier/regulator red connected to, know as the T connection on various posts on here.
The black connects to the single point ground see many posts on here or just use the search facility for information.
The three blacks on the other plug connect to the three wires that come from the stator it does not matter which wire connects to which ( there is no polarity)
All joints where twisted together soldered and shrink wrapped.
The two left over wires in the bikes harness can be taped up and tucked away as they were for the handle bar loop and are not in use now.

This one looks the real thing "note" the model number on the rear https://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-RZ...488699&hash=item443e205f1d:g:hm4AAOSwodNc5haM

Have a look quick eBay seems to change the links some how I can recommend this seller powersportsnation i and others have got SH775 s from him.

The DB Electrical R/Rs on Ebay are fake SH775.

Ton's of fakes on ebay these days. Be sure to verify the unit has "SH775" printed on the top fin. Price is rising on them. It's hard to find good samples for less than $50 these days...but even at that, it's money well spent.

Just got some time to actually check it out. The guy put a SH633-12 RR on it...

Thanks for all the input, its awesome to have so many people willing to share their wisdom.

Also thanks for the ebay link. I googled one an found this at the DBelectrical website https://www.dbelectrical.com/produc...ier-for-polaris-800-ranger-rzr-2011-2014.html

Is this a good option? Thanks again

No. As already mentioned that's a chinese knockoff of a Shindengen (Japanese company) R/R.

Okay, good to know. Heard DB was a good source, I'll try out the Ebay special. Thanks again.

Can I be optimistic in thinking that SH633-12 is the culprit for the symptoms?

Rywilly, Nessism has SH775 for sale in this thread.
if you get it from him you know it's the real deal and he tests them before he sells them.

For a stator, I think most people prefer to buy new. Rick's or Electrosport.

Yeah, bummed I actually already pulled the trigger on the ebay one before I saw his message... I'll definitely go with Rick's for the stator.
