To begin, I love bikes. I have 5 now and over the last 40 years have owned probably 50 or so, plus ridden scores more having worked in the M/C industry in the early 80's. Since about 2004 I have made a small side business out of restoring or modifying old, wrecked, or neglected machines as well as the newer bikes that get crashed. Have had my creations, words and photos in dozens of magazines, but have taken the last 2 years off to get an online college degree while working full time. Right before I embarked on that journey, I purchased a fair prospect for a radical/classic caf? machine I had been yearning to build. It is a 1978 GS-550-E, first of the 6-speed duel disc braked cast rim units. It was in only fair shape but ran even without air box or mufflers. Tank had no rust and nary a dent in it, so that was good. Price was OK to, so she has been sitting dismantled for 2 years. Right before I set things aside, I found that the chain had come undone at some point in its life and had bent the shift shaft and clutch pushrod. They both still worked but the seals were shot and it leaked copious amounts of oil.
The oil pan came off and the bad parts were cut to extract while new/NOS were sourced off the interwebz. I started amassing new/upgrade/caf? components, but still have to source and obtain a desired electronic ignition to replace the points, and maybe a new regulator rectifier setup. I will probably upgrade the front and rear M/C and add SS brake lines, but will be scoring this forum for ideas and general information. I look forward to working with you all.
