Another paint thread....

So at the same time that my electrics are getting sorted out, I've got a pro painter who owes me a favor and will paint my 750EZ
Starting inspiration:

What I'm envisioning is BMW LeMans Blue Metallic with a single white stripe as in the pic above. The questions are:

1) Single stripe, Single stripe with one pinstripe in white on each side or single white stripe with two black pinstripes in the white?

2) stripes on the fenders or solid blue?

3) side covers? two tone S style seems unbalanced without the swoopy stripes on the S. Not sure how deal with it.

4) use the tank and side cover badges or get decals? I kinda like the red S on the tailpiece.

Obviously I have come to terms with not keeping it stock but I don't want it to be a wannabe Cooley. Wannabe Shelby Cobra maybe!

That's kinda what I'm looking for...

Looks like it will be a pretty looking bike when you are done. Pictures will be required though.

OK, had another thought while sitting in the dentist's chair this afternoon. What do you think of a deep blue metallic with the same pinstripes that are stock except the outer one white and the inner stripe silver? I think that would keep the styling but update it at the same time.

Isn't it funny how well pain will inspire us to greater things. LoL sounds like it would look good and give it your own personal twist. I am all for that.

Okay this may sound kinda goofy but, that blue with the silver solid stripe and 2 thinner black stripes in the middle? Not so much like the Cooley but more like the Shelby Cobra in the pic, without the blue in the center. Just tossin it out there...

I stopped by the shop today to talk color. The pieces are primed and beautiful! We're going Lexus ultrasonic blue with extra metalflake and pure white stripe down the middle of the tank and fender. He is going to play with a white shadow line along the bottom of the side panels extending back.

This is the main color:

Robbie is going to add metal flake to make it sparklier, an informal poll of friends all said "sparklier is better"

There's going to be a white stripe down the center of the tank and fender and cowl piece.

He also is thinking about doing white along the lower angled edge of the side covers going back to the cowl. I'm not sure how it will come out but I trust his judgement and I'm sure it will look great.

Real pretty color, for sure. It'll look great with the white stripes. You and your painter probably already know, but just in case, make sure he leaves a paint line around the filler opening that he can seal off from future gas fumes. Would hate to see it bubble back.

How do you do the paint line?

If he holds the masking back just below the shoulder of the opening, it can then be sealed off with Cold Weld or JB weld. Just run a thin film over the paint edge with a finger and that should do it. Otherwise, gas fumes will peel the fresh paint back.

Thanks, the guy doing the work owns a landscaping company and he and his two brothers also do restorations and detailing. They just finished a VW Speedster that was just sick.

Can you explain this again please, or perhaps post a picture?
I'm not understanding where the JB Weld goes or the tape.

The entire filler opening should be (and remain) bare metal to right below the shoulder of the raised area, pretty much where the filler opening is braised into the tank. When it gets masked off for paint, the paint line that ends there should then have a smear of JB weld, or better yet, Cold Weld (a 1-1, 2-part Permatex product) lightly applied over that exposed edge of paint. If it's painted right up to the hole, it should be sanded back to bare metal again and then the sealer applied with the tip of your finger. It's something that actually needs to be considered even before the primer stage. It doesn't need to be any more than just a thin coat but it does need to completely cover the paint edge and be below the horizontal surface of the opening to allow the gas cap to fit cleanly. It's really easy to do, (if planned out in advance) and it should eliminate the risk of gas fumes eating into the fresh paint edge if done properly. I learned this technique the hard way. I, too, in the past have experienced paint bubbling back around the filler opening, but this system seems to have cured the problem for the many bikes I've painted since.

The pics were too big to include in the post I am ecstatic with how it came out! Robbie put about 30 hours total into prepping and painting. There's six coats of clear on it. He sealed the paint around the filler neck, then cleared it.
