    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

another smoking question

so ive discussed the problem of the smoking bike when its on its side stand, oil shifts to that side of the bike and tends to burn.
i also asked about the oil pan light coming on around 2000 rpm and turning off before and after.
the problem at hand is... my buddies and i were riding around town tonight, and we hit 95. apparently when i first dropped the bike into 2nd and gunned it, i started smoking, i was above 4000 rpm, and i continually smoked until i slowed to below the 4 grand range. any ideas? am i messing up my bike? it seems to run fine, idles around 1000, and is an all around blast to ride, but i still get smoke when i sit it on its side stand, and the oil pan regularly comes on at 2 grand once the bike warms up.

finally, i was told my friend can hear a chain sound, he couldnt describe it, kinda like a loose chain. he heard it when we were just cruising, not racing, but he heard it when he was in his car. i didnt check the chain cause it was late, but could a loose chain make that kind of a sound?
 
Well, without more info and not actually seeing the bike or hearing it, i will throw out a couple of balls here. Does your bike smoke at start up? That is valve guides. Does your bike smoke more during deceleration? That is rings. If you get a steady smoking condition that doesn't change it will be a combination of both. If your light comes on when it is on the side stand and you have the proper amount of oil in your case, you have an oil pressure problem (or maybe a bad sender) which you could bandaid with a heavier oil, and points to either pump or worn bearings.
 
as far as more information goes, it is a 78 gs 750, with 22300 miles on it. bike is in great condition, the guy who i bought it from only rode it 70 miles, but the guy he bought it from kept it in immaculate condition so i think its safe to say he kept up on all services. any more information i can supply?
the only time it smokes at startup is when its on the sidestand and then it only smokes out the lower pipe, when its sitting up straight, its fine. i dont think it smokes at deceleration, my buddy said it only started smoking when we were cooking, he said it sounded like it was running closer to 6 when it started smoking, not 4. i tend to think its the last option, because of the oil pan light. i know when i stop the bike, the light stays on, i wasn't sure if that was regular or not.
as far as the bandaiding issue is concerned, since im using a lighter oil, what causes it to change pressure? and why does a heavier oil work?
finally, what bearings might need to be replaced?

sorry i typed this up on a break between classes. if ive run the bike for a while and turn it off, then turn the key back to the on position, the oil p light stays on. if i want to start the bike when it has already been warmed up, the oil p light comes on before i kick start it. i dont know why this sounds so confusing to me even though i'm typing it. engine off, key in the on position, red oil p light on. engine running, key in the on position, red oil p light off....until i hit 2000 rpm after the bike has had time to warm up.

sounds to me like oil not returning to the pan quick enough.try about 3 oz of seafoam in the crankcase. run it about 50 miles then change the oil and filter. it should be better now. but it may take a few times of this to clean it all out.
 
I'd check the valve timing. Sounds like what my bike did when the cam chain adjuster failed and I jumped a tooth on the cam chain. Lots of smoke. Start there, then check compression.
 
ill try the seafoam first, but just in case, how do i go about checking valve timing?
 
Thin oil when it heats up gets THINNER so your pressure will go down. A heavier oil will keep its viscosity to a higher temperature so your pressure won't go down as much. So run 15-40 or 20-50 in your bike and maybe the oil light won't come on.
