anybody ever repaint a frame?

Cosmetically my bike doesn't look half bad with the newer paint job and all the polished aluminum when I get done. I'm debating on repainting the rear swing arm since a PO at some point had battery acid drip on it and start a rust problem that covers the brace at the front of the arm.

I've eye balled what I would have to disassemble but thought I would get some additional input before I try and move forward with this. My question is what all needs to be disassembled in order to repaint the swing arm and what parts would be recommended for replacement upon reassembly?

I used spray cans. Not sure how well it will hold up in the long haul but it came out really nice. I bought the best stuff I could find in a can. Which I am sure is still cr@p.

That is where you'll have to see if one of the shafty members here can help you out.

I know with my chain drive, I just had to remove:

Wheel
Shocks
Rear Brake components (this included the brake line)
Swingarm bolt

Then the swingarm came right out. Had two "dust" caps on each end as well as a washer. Then I removed the bearings as well Planned on replacing them anyway, and it was just easier to not really worry about messing them up.

I just got my frame back from being blasted today. I'll take pictures and post them tomorrow in my OldRed thread.

Hoomgar,did you completely strip the old paint off the frame?I,m at that stage now and was wondering if I should have it bead-blasted or just get stuck in with paint-stripper and do it myself :?

Not going to answer for him, but I'll chime in with my two cents.

I know Nerobro and Skreemer stripped a frame by themselves using stripper etc. (there is a thread about it somewhere I think, unless it has been purged)
I just had mine sand blasted. It took the guy a couple of weeks (ok, months) to get to it, but that was partially my own fault for telling him up front there was no hurry. It may have just been because he is a friend of my boss, but he only wanted $50 to do it. Personally I think it was worth it to not have to deal with the chemicals and associated hazards that come with it.

I cleaned it up really good, sanded down the few rust spots and primed them. Then when the primer was cured I sanded the whole frame enough to rough it up and painted over everything. That was two years ago and it holds up well when it only sits in a garage and never sees weather or sunshine LOL! :lol:

It does look good though and I hope it holds us well. If not, I will powder coat. So far so good.
