    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just got my 1980 GS1000G running this fall after sitting for 14 years under wraps in my garage. installed a 4-1 Jardine exhaust system I found on eBay and the bike is running well after cleaning the carbs, rejetting and installing a K&N filter in the stock airbox.
Saw a listing on EBay for an X-Pipe exhaust system for $579.99.

Is this pipe any good? The inventor,Monty Campbell, claims all other 4-1 systems are no good and of course his is the only one that increases power with no rejetting needed.

Is there any merit to this or just BS?
Anyone try one or currently running one?
 
Show me an inventor that does NOT claim all his competitors' products are 'no good'.

There does seem to be some merit in the benefits of the system, as there are many versions of it available for cars, trucks, bikes, etc. Whether it's worth about 50% more than a decent 4-into1 system, ... I don't know.

Back in the day these pipes were tested by one of the najor MC mags and found to be crap not delivering what they promised.
 
The link to his analysis on exhaust scavenging is interesting but I am no mechanical engineer to say if it's true or a bunch of baloney.
No where does he show any dyno tests to prove his analysis, only a bunch of positive reviews from "happy" customers.
His patents date back from the 1980's and I assume that he has been selling this product for years.
Hard to believe that no one on this forum hasn't tested one or seen an X-pipe on someone else's bike.

Also found another guy in California who goes by the name of Carpy (hotrodcarpy on ebay and www.cb750cafe.com) selling his version of the Yoshimura 4-1.
Primarily started selling these for the old Honda 750's and is now making them for other bikes including the GS series.
He is heavily invested into the cafe and bobber style. Some of his listings started out at $250 for a steel pipe plus $200 for ceramic coating.

He is more interested in the sound and looks than claiming performance. Talked to him on the phone and he seems like a nice guy.

Any comments of experience on both would be appreciated.
 
I remember a guy had a Murray xpipe on a dragbike. Then one day his rear tire went flat in the traps and he slid on that pipe couldn't stop he took it off after that.
 
I looked into buying one for my 850 a couple of years back. The performance gains may have stacked up, but the draw back for me was having to drop the system for every oil change.

I know that on a V-8 powered car it increases the mid range power and also reduces the volume of the exhaust note making it quieter too. ;)
I may just have to see if I could make something similar for one of these GS'es one of these days. Hmmm.

Note that on a typical V-8 engine, the firing order is not even, if you look at it from side to side.

Ignoring the actual cylinder that is firing and just looking at which side is firing, you will find that it is L-R-L-L-R-L-R-R.
The X-pipe will help even out the irregular pulses, then divert the flow through two outlet pipes.

An inline 4 has even-firing exhaust pulses, so there is nothing to compensate for. You still have a 4-into-1 pipe, but it immediately splits into two mufflers.

I think the only advantage would be the fact that you have two mufflers, which would not be as restrictive as a single one.

now i highly recommend a kerker KX2 if one can be found..
4-1-2 system...AWESOME power everywhere!
and has a sound that is different from any other pipes i used.
