Anyone recognize this Master Cylinder?

So this is kind of a take off on my previous master cylinder post... Chef1366 helped me out by showing me a picture of our 1980 GS1100L resevoir... I realize that the resevoir I received from Bikebandit as an OEM part is correct. My master cylinder is apparently from a different bike.

Can anyone identify where this is from? I need to buy parts to rebuild it. Thank you.

except that it's been painted black it looks like the ones off of an 80(maybe earlier) 550... I dunno though I'd rely on more expert opinions than mine...

Thanks for the responses. From the outside it looks identical to the 80 1100L. It's the diameter of the resevoir and the pattern where the resevoir fits that is different. I appreciate the help

jgordon has a master cylinder in a box of goodies. It's a different type but it will bolt right on. Ask him if he'll part with it.

Beleive it or not...it looks just like the one off of my 450L...just painted black.

I am pretty sure I have a master cylinder assembly for a 1980 GS 1100L in my parts bin. If you're interested, I'll take a lookie see tomorrow and check its condition. If its decent (I think it will be), I'll send it to you.

Did you used to have an 80 1100L 16 valve? If yes, why don't you still have it?

Thanks folks, I appreciate it! A replacement is just as good as long as I can figure out where it came from! :-D

Snark, Yeah the previous owner did that.... That's why I bought a new resevoir only to find it didn't fit ;) Is this what your cylinder looks like too on the inside?

Yeah, used to have one....a parts bike. There was too much missing on it to consider rebuilding it. Still have a few things left from it. :-)

I'll look tomorrow. I know right where it'll be. In the rotors, calipers and brake parts box. LOL

I believe that is an Asco master cylinder. Suzuki started using them when they phased out the Nissin hardware that the GTs used; in 1977 with the introduction of the GS750. It was used on several models, GTs and GSs:

Part Description = RESERVOIR,MASTER CYLINDER
Model Count = 22
GS1000C 1978 1000 GS1000 STREET
GS1000EC 1978 1000 GS1000E STREET
GS1000EN 1979 1000 GS1000E STREET
GS1000N 1979 1000 GS1000 STREET

GS550B 1977 549 GS550 STREET
GS550C 1978 549 GS550 STREET
GS550EC 1978 549 GS550E STREET
GS550N 1979 549 GS550 STREET
GS750B 1977 748 GS750 STREET

GT550-B 1977 543 GT550 INDY STREET
GT550A 1976 543 GT550 INDY STREET

Then, of course, they went to the square kind, which I suppose work better...

The parts you need to rebuild it are still availble from Suzuki, for quite a fair price:
PISTON & CUP SET
59600-33810

Buy the reservoir and o-ring while you're at it:

.RESERVOIR (just the plastic bit)
59687-47021 (replaces 59687-33621)

.O RING
59686-33620

Because it's used the on GTs, I've had to learn a little bit about them 8-[

I went through my parts stuff and I do have that same mastercylinder. It was from an 80 GS 1100 L. Condition appears close to what you already have though. I put brake fluid in it and was not able to get it to develop any pressure, so I will guess it would have to be rebuilt to be used. Dont know if this is going to help. :-)

Whatcha got Earl:wink:

Not a whole lot..................
airbox
front and rear calipers and rotors
front and rear rims (axles maybe)
Battery box
Misc small brackets
possibly footpegs (would have to search LOL)
Engine complete minus carbs and starter.
Probably handle bar caps

Thats all I can think of at the moment. If you need something, I can Look and see if I have it. :-)

Earl, does the MC resevoir you have match the MC resevoir in the picture above? If so, then I'm all fouled up.

If the MC looks the same as in the picture, but the resevoir is the same as in the attached picture in this post, then it is in fact an 80.

A rebuild would require a new piston & cup set if I'm not mistaken, which is kind of expensive. On the other hand, at least I would know the model from which it came in the event that it requires maintenance in the future. Boy what a pain in the rear :-D

Thanks for the information... Were you able to tell by the resevoir? That seems the be the only discernable way to tell the various years apart

What I have looks exactly like your picture, both inside and out.

Hrmm.... rats. Looks like I still can't place this MC then since it looks different from chef's, but the part I got from Bike Bandit matches the one chef has. OK Earl, thank you so much for the offer. Looks like I may have to try and pick up one from an E model or something.

Bill, does JG know the origin of any of the MCs in his parts bin?

You should be able to replace it with a mastercylinder from any dual front disk model bike.
