So the bike shop that has had my 82 GS850 for THREE MONTHS has now given up. According to them, they replaced the valve cover, synched the carbs, etc. did a bunch of stuff, and the first time they took it out, they found that the #1 cylinder wasn't firing, and when they tried to push it to force it to fire, a plug blew and oil leaked everywhere. He said he doesn't know if it's a bent valve or what, but they are through trying to figure it out.

Thanks.

So anyone have any thoughts on this?

What do you mean a plug blew? Are they saying the plug came out of the head because the threads are stripped? Also when you mention they tried to push it to get it to fire do you mean push start it of push the mechanical limits if the engine (over stress it). As for the oil leak it would take an opening from the inside of the engine to the outside for oil to puke all over. I don't beleave a bent valve will cause the oil to leak. I generally don't like to be a pesimist my initial though is they took it out and an it real hard to try to get the dead cyclinder to fire and threw a rod. It of course may not be that extreme. You mentioned that the replaced the valve cover gasket, did you have them adjust the valves? if so they may not have gotten one of the valve shims seated correctly and the cam could have pushed it out when they started it. this would atleast contain the damage to the head are instead of the entire engine.

I think I would go have a look at the bike and see what you can see. and while you are there I would have them run a compression test on all four cylinders and see what the results are that may help narrow it down to a mechanical problem or fuel/air/spartk issue. Keep us informed and the more detail you can give us the better we can help diagnose the problem.

Yes, get it to your place, take pictures of it and let's get it figured out.
parts... http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=134093

why did they replace the valve cover? did you break it? from your post it sounds like there trying to sell you muffler bearings

Come the revolution brothers, when we've got 'em up against the wall..............Cheers,Simon.

"Cry Havoc and let slip the dogs of war".........sounds like the dealer is incompetent. You are better off taking pics as has been suggested and doing the work yourself.

Probably lost one of the half moom cam plugs that they resused... Needs the carbs cleaned ????

Yeah, not much use trying to sync up a set of clogged carbs. As with any bike that has been resurrected from the barn or the back 40, START with a carb cleaning, sync, valve adjustment and points (if you have them) adjustment/replacement. Pretty simple and common stuff. Should be able to find everything you need right here, or on BassCliff's site.

Sounds like a case of the dealer trying to do something that they don't have the knowledge and/or experience to do. Most dealers just change oil, tires, chains and sprockets, and spark plugs. General easy maintenance that lazy people don't feel like doing themselves. The usual lackeys don't even know what points are anymore, let alone know what to do with them. Engine rebuilds? Troubleshooting? Not really worth their time to try to figure it out for what they refer to as a "boat anchor". They'd rather do an oil change and a wax job on the latest plastic fantastic or behemoth cruiser. There's VERY few dealers that I would even consider handing my bike over to. In my few years in bikes, I've seen a lot of stuff that was "fixed" at the dealer.

Ok, I'll stop my dealership hating rant now.

Take some pics of the engine that show what you're talking about and the good folks on here will be able to help you out, if not come by and lend a hand. We all love to see old bikes come back to life. :D

Bent valve?! BAHHH!
Get the bike back and do it yourself.

OR
Post the business's name, number and address here and we'll gang up on them and shame them into fixing it right.
:D

I hope you don't have to pay them for not fixing (and possibly breaking) your bike. :-k

1/ The 850 rocker boxes will leak if the gasket isn't on correctly.
2/ There's no way in hell that a plug will blow out of a head by pushing.
3/ If there's a bent valve no way it was pushed.
4/ Oil leaks. My GS1000 blew its head gasket after having a carb drop on me.
5/ No1 is possibly a blocked/gummed up carb or a duff plug cap/spark plug.

Either get the dealer to fix whats gone wrong at there expense or get it back from them and sort it yourself.

Suzuki mad

Thanks guys, for all the support. I'm going to try to figure it out after I get it back from the robbery shop. He is planning to charge me for parts, and I'm planning not to pay for labor. If he wants to push it with me, he's going to have a fight on his hands. (I work at a law firm)

You're right about them not wanting to deal with older bikes, or having the knowledge to do it. Lesson learned.

So the question is, are you selling it, parting it or looking in the mirror?

Well, I guess it depends on what happens when I get it back from this charlatan. If I can ride it home, down to the garage in Hingham, i'll take a look at it, snap some pics and get it up on the site here and see if we can't figure out what to do with it.

I had the seat professionally restored, I installed a stage 3 jet kit with pods, and cleaned a very nice looking set of carbs, so there are good parts to be had if I can't get it up and running.

shop wows

Not to stir more trouble. Was the plug damaged. also drop oil pan, they may have dropped some thing in eng to cause this.hall it home.dont run just dissasemble. video would show what you find with out him trying to say you took apart damaged it, then took pictures to get out of paying.good luck. SAN

Well, got the word. 200 bucks in parts, no labor, which is fair, i guess. however, the #1 piston won't fire - he thinks it's a bent valve, and it's still riding bad. I'm going to try to drive it home on Friday. I think i'm going to call it a loss and sell it. Lurch_12_2000 has a great 83 1100 that I would love to just be able to drive off.

EDIT: Anyone who believes they can help me get it running, I'll pay your expenses to get down here and show me the ropes, plus whatever hourly fee your time is worth.

Hey whats up Jimmy? Long time no write or hear man. I put my bike away for the winter (cleaned the frame, pipe and loaded the end of the pipe and carbs with WD-40 and stabil-ed it all) I am planning on adjusting the valves next spring and making sure everything is up to par with my bike and am probably going to sell it because I am afraid to say that I have sort of lost interest in my bike in all. My third pipe has no color to it at all and the other pipes have that blueish/purple color. I am thinking after everything else I have done that it has to be the valves. But I am going to tackle that next spring when I have the tools to do that. Alot of my buddies and I have dirtbikes that I have been paying more attention to. Everything on my bike is going to be running next to perfect and then will sell it. It's going to be a knot in my stomach to sell it after the frustration and countless amounts of time I cursed while doing the top-end and making everything fit with basically all new parts. The knot will come first about the price for which I will sell it, because all the time and money I have put into it and then another knot for letting it go. I dunno, that's my thoughts anyways. I was suggesting that I could take a look at it, but am definitely not saying I can fix it only because it sounds like over my head. But would offer to take a look at it for no charge at all if ya want.
