DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

signal left, and go right

Did you learn to drive in New Mexico? Here it's either signal one direction and turn the other or no signal at all.

Wow. This place lit up like a spinnin' tire! Long as we're all watching this post, are there any GS'ers in Belgium reading this? There's a guy named Oliver in here asking for help with his GS. (See "Help me rebuild my bike, sad story") in GS Stories. He needs some hands-on help I think. Spread the word.

Iron Mike doesn't like the phrasiology of 'ape hangers'. IM doesn't like 'monkey bars' either. The last fight I had I imagined he used those words. Ever had the pee water knocked out of you? Keep it up - IM's comin.

Ape Hangers Hmmmmmmmm

Ape Hangers Hmmmmmmmm

The question at the top started out about getting new cables for ape hangers. Not weather or not it was proper for him to put ape hangers on his bike....... As for me the choice is simple I like my apes (Being 6-4) I am not all hunched up on top of my ride.........

My 1000L had 8" rise and 13" pull back. If your 650L bars are the same there should be plenty of cable unless you are going completely "ape".
I kinda like the look, just don't care to do a lot of miles with that stance.
Good Luck

you can get the chopper look on a gs

APE HANGERS

APE HANGERS

I'm running 8" rise western bars on my '79 GS550E and I use standard cables,I've just rerouted them slightly. No problems.Go for it,man,it's your bike! :)

Can't say I agree with the choice of apehangers, but that's strictly up to you.

I don't know anyone well enough to pick out a motorcycle for them, and I certainly don't know anyone well enough to tell them how it should look.

I know a guy with an odd type of arthritis, and somehow a sky-high apehanger is the only way he can ride without pain.

Anyway, back to your question...
You can often re-route the existing cables to accomodate a handlebar change, and this is probably about your only choice. Is it even possible to get custom (non Hardley-Ableson) control cables made anymore?

But remember that this is EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS! You could definitely kill yourself if you get it even slightly wrong. I'm not kidding.

When I installed lower bars on my GS850G, I had to make a few careful changes to the routing of the clutch and throttle cables to give the extra few inches of cable someplace to go. I also added a length of plastic flex tube covering the clutch cable at one point under the tank to make sure it didn't rub through any other wires in its new home.

You have to be positive that the re-routed cable will still operate smoothly. If there's any change at all in the way the control feels, try again. And you have to check the throttle cable by turning it lock-to-lock with the engine idling. If there's any change at all in idle speed when you turn the handlebars, you have to fix the problem ASAP.

And don't forget to pay attention to the air drag on the cables at speed -- make sure they don't blow back into the pipes, tangle with anything or create any awkward angles.
