With the continual questions regarding alternates to the expensive K&N filters, has anybody used the APE pod filters?

http://gszone.biz/carbs.html

Scroll down under the carbs and you will find them. $59.95 for a set of 4. I have a set in my garage still in the package, and they look to be dead ringers for K&N filters, except for 1/2 the price. I will be installing them in the next few weeks and will have a report when I get to it.

Can't imagine APE selling sub-standard parts...maybe they won't have the life-time of service that the K&N's supposedly offer???

Didn't V&H do a set that looked good too?? Until they fell apart......

Doesn't Kris V work/ is sponsored by APE? If so maybe he can give some insight... ask if he uses them on his race bike lol

Yeah I mean unless the mesh was too fine making it too restrictive, or too big allowing trash in, or the rubber boot was crap, don't see how they could be any better or worse. I inherited K&N's from my PO.

That is how I feel, too. APE has a good rep and they generally don't offer junk at all.

To be honest, how many people come close to wearing out a set of filters? If they offer half the service life of K&N's I will never know. How many times do you clean and oil a set of pods per year? I might do it twice if it's a big year. They should last forever at that rate.

I will post a review when I get them installed.

You'll know if they flow the same as K&N's if a Dynojet Stage III kit gets your jetting right.

I currently have cheapo Emgo pods (paper elements, not cleanable) and my jetting is excellent. It is a Canadian model and we got the adjustable needles to at least 82. I jetted it with the OEM needles and Mikuni parts, runs very well.

I am expecting to maybe have to tweak the mixture screws a touch with these pods. Hopefully no needle adjustments will be needed. I left the main jets one size big just to be sure of no lean runs at WOT in spring and fall weather, so they should be OK with a bit of extra airflow.

I am also working on fabbing a custom megaphone tailpipe to replace the Kerker canister that is both too small and obnoxiously loud. I should gain flow and lose volume with the new pipe, but I am expecting a complete round of tweaking once that is installed... Hopefully it will be even stronger after it is all done.

Most likely those APE filters are $60 each, so $160 a set.

Nope, $59.99 gets a blister pack of 4. At least, that is what mine cost a couple of years ago and that is how they came packaged.

And where did you take math?? 4 x $60 = $240....:-0

well i got a 4 pack of K&N pods for 80 some dollars so wht not spend the extra 25 dollars for quality

Math???...what's that?? :oops::oops:

I have the APE filters and the only drawback I experienced was that I really have to force them onto my carbs. Seems like APE tried to cover wider range of carbs with one "universal" size.

Greg, thanks for the warning. I will make sure I have a hair dryer handy to warm them up a bit before I attempt to install them.

I have the APE filters on my RS36 equiped Bandit 1200

Fit and finish were perfect out of the box. I have around 4000 miles on them with no issues. They are very nice and I see no reason to pay more for K+N or any other brand.

Our filters are American made and very high quality. We have sold them since the Mikuni flatslides came out. Never any complaints.

We are also a K&N distributor and will be more than happy to sell you those if you are more comfortable with them.

And yes, the price shown on our website is for a set of four.

Let me ask this question. Does the $59.95 price make these filters seem like some Chinese crap? If we raised the price would they seem like a better product?

These filters sound like the hot tip Jay now that we understand what's going on. Please DON'T raise the price. :) K&N's are pretty outragiously priced so your's seem like a great alternative. Hopefully they are cleanable so they have a long lifespan.

Might help if you added a little more verbage to the ad on your site. The American made reference would definetly help seperate them from those cheap Emgo pods that are throw aways.

Just for my information, does the APE filters require oiling or they just straight up paper filters?

Jay,
wasn't trying to sound like I was bagging on the APE air cleaners. I'm very happy with them. The extremely tight fit was just something I noticed as different from my K&Ns.
