A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Are all Polaris R/Rs created equal?

I'm replacing the original R/R on my '81 GS850G. Apparently the consensus on here is that the Polaris R/R is the hot ticket replacement. There are a bunch of them on Ebay; one style has two receptacles on the side (making a separate wire harness/adapter necessary), whereas another style has the six wires hard-wired into it.

So I have two questions: are they all the same spec-wise? And whether they are or aren't, what specs does my 850 require?

Again, any help is greatly appreciated!

Make sure to get an SH775. It will be printed on the side of the unit. If the ebay photo doesn't show the lettering ask the seller to confirm before purchase.

There are ones being sold as the SH775 that are not. The manufacturer uses the same body for a number of different types of R/R, so you need to be sure it is an actual SH775 before buying. The real SH775 has two plugs on the body and no pigtails coming off of it and will be labeled as an SH775 on the body, as Ed says. Triumph have a nice little harness available that plugs straight onto the SH775 and gives you OEM quality plugs and pigtails to connect up to your bike with. If you need the part # I can dig it out. The harness costs less than $20 and is well worth it in terms of convenience.

Thanks for that info. The reason I'm wondering about specs is because, to me, having another set of connections is another potential source of problems (corrosion, etc, not to mention the additional expense of buying the harness). The style that comes hard wired eliminates that potential, and matches the OEM setup. So if the electrical properties are the same, I'd just as soon go with the hard wired style. Having said all that, if the hard wired style has lesser specs than the genuine SH775, then superior specs wins out over convenience in this case.

The Polaris part number for this R/R is 4012941. You can get one new from Polaris dealers online or maybe locally. You can also get them used on eBay for about 1/3 to 1/2 the price but you have to be careful you don't wind up with a knock-off or "compatible replacement". Lots of them look exactly like the geniune article but are not. It should have "SH775BA" printed on the end opposite the connector. It looks like this: http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/YNsAAOSw~e5ZT-kJ/s-l1600.jpg

The SH775 can be be turned into hard-wired, just solder the wires into the tabs and fill the connector with silicone or potting compound. Tricky, but doable.

No, they are NOT all equal.

The proper one is going to look like this:

However, you have to watch the wording on the ad to make sure it's and actual Polaris part number 4012941.

You will find MANY listings that say "for Polaris RZR" or "fits Polaris RZR", but if you look down at the specifics, you will see that it's not a Polaris brand, nor is it the proper part number.

Here is a good one:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Polaris-RZR...%3A3cc2f1f715d0ab6bf8d77afafffbd934%7Ciid%3A1

Are these the type where a certain Triumph part number is a good wiring connector for it....?

Sorry to piggyback onto an old thread but does anyone have the part no. for the Triumph harness or a place to start searching for one?

Looking into replacing my stator & R/R and any helpful tips are appreciated.

Thanks!

triumph part T2500676 link lead regulator
To wire it to a 775
Cut off the two small plugs then carefully split the harness so you have one plug with two brown and two black wires twist the Browns together likewise with the blacks so you now have a plug with one brown and one black so to speak.
The brown connects to the red wire in the bikes harness where the original rectifier/regulator red connected to, know as the T connection on various posts on here.
The black connects to the single point ground see many posts on here or just use the search facility for information.
The three blacks on the other plug connect to the three wires that come from the stator it does not matter which wire connects to which ( there is no polarity)
All joints where twisted together soldered and shrink wrapped.
The two left over wires in the bikes harness can be taped up and tucked away as they were for the handle bar loop and are not in use now.
