So my brother nearly lost it on my bike today. He was going 50+ mph and the back wheel locks up!!!!!!!

He is OK thankfully. So I get the bike towed to my Dads cause that was the closest place.
1. He said he pulled the wheel and the rear transfer case had good fluid and turns OK.
2. The u joint on the shaft looks new.... and functions well
3. Shifts through all gears per the indicator light.
4. Bike runs well in "neutral" and has oil in the crank case

So is my trans toast? Is their separate fluid for the trans? Never had a trans issue before

INSERT FOUL LANGUAGE HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also vote we add a "WTF JUST HAPPENED" section to the forums HA!

How about the caliper?? Gets heated and then seized against the rotor..spins free when cooled down?? may be time to do a rebuild. Whens the last time fluids were changed or the system has been redone???

Check your secondary drive unit for damage. Drain the oil and see what glitters. :(

Negative... with the back wheel off of the bike if you try to let the clutch out while in gear, it will die. Rebuilt the calipers last year!

Gears that drive the propellor shaft....back of tranny ..flange bolted to the back end. Take the swing arm off and take out the flange.

Yes..take off the back cover on the left ( like where a sprocket cover would be ) and youll see the fill and level holes. may be pretty greasy under there so ave some rags handy to wipe the cases off.

I seriously never knew about this oil level.... why do I always have to pay the highest price for my stupidity? Time to find a parts bike *&%&*%*)(^%^&%(%*$)*

Stick a pencil magnet in the oil that comes out and swish it around..see if it comes out full of metal shavings.

Rebuilt the calipers last year!
But did you rebuild the master cylinder? :-k

Even more important, did you clean out the compensation port (which can be done without rebuilding the master)?

If that compensation port is plugged, it will not allow fluid from the caliper to bleed back into the reservoir as it gets heated from the friction of the pads rubbing on the disk. Since the fluid is expanding and can't get into the reservoir, the only place it can expand is to push on the pads, which can lock up the wheel.

.

Which was my initial thought as well Steve. Still check the bevel gears as well though..to cover all bases. AND also do the full monty on the FRONT system as well. His brother can just be well pleaed that it was the back and not the front!!!

Failing the change the brake lines can cause failures like this too. Hope its an easy fix.

Well let's see about this… When the rear wheel locked up, was the secondary drive hot or was the brake hot?
