A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

We are generally discussing the fact that his rear wheel locked up.

We then progressed to some of the common causes of rear wheel lock-up.

One of the reasons could be lack of lubrication in the driveline, specifically the secondary drive (the front sprocket area on a chain-drive bike).

Another reason (which could happen on any bike) is that the compensation port in the master cylinder is blocked, not allowing fluid transfer.

As I mentioned in post #16, if that port is not open, the only place for expanding fluid to go is behind the pistons, pushing on the pads, locking up the rear wheel.

Did you follow this time?

yes but i would have thought he would have popped off the caliper to see if the wheel would then turn.

Yeah, you would have thought that and I would have thought that, but he evidently doesn't know to check that.
You can also just loosen the bleeder nipple to release any pressure that has built up.

As tkent asked, "what was hot?". That is most-likely where the problem lies. :-\\\

But did you rebuild the master cylinder? :-k

Even more important, did you clean out the compensation port (which can be done without rebuilding the master)?

If that compensation port is plugged, it will not allow fluid from the caliper to bleed back into the reservoir as it gets heated from the friction of the pads rubbing on the disk. Since the fluid is expanding and can't get into the reservoir, the only place it can expand is to push on the pads, which can lock up the wheel.

Yes... you did it for me remember?

No rear wheel is off the bike shaft is out... secondary is prob trash... Ill post soon

does steve know you under this nick-mick?
Yes, I do. (I even see him at work, occasionally. )

And yes, I cleaned the master cylinder.

I have worked on more than one bike since then and I have slept since then.

"Memory" is such a wonderful concept, I wish I could remember how to use it. :-k
