I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Bandit Coil Mod

Forum Mentor
I found some 01 Bandit coils on fleabay and was going to swap them for my 83 1100 coils/wires. I got them yesterday and of course the center wires are too short so I am thinking to pull the wires and replace them with new ones from Z1. The coils appear to be in good shape and are a direct bolt/spade connection mount to the frame. I wondered if anyone else has done this. I searched and there are different opinions on even using the Bandit coils. They appear to have a silicone based sealer on them and I would like to clean out the inside area by the spike before installing the new wires but am not sure what would be the best way to do this. The housings are plastic so I would not want to use anything too harsh.

Suggestions? Thanks

I've done it three times now, including on my 1150. I got a box of Accel wires from Advance Auto Parts and some new caps as well. Get a high-temp sealant of some kind to lock those wires in and you should be good to go. All my bikes have had that mod for 4+ years now and I've never had a failure.

Thanks Mike, I had seen your previous posts and saw there was some discussion on the Ohms but I have heard it is pretty much a direct swap for these coils. Did you use anything to get the old silicone/sealer out of the Bandit coils or just scrape it out as best you can.

Just took my time and scraped it out as best I can. Made sure to "twist" the wires in when I installed the replacements.

Some Bandit coils have a different (lower) impedance than the stock GS coils. You might want to check into this detail and install ballast resistors to replicate the stock coil load otherwise you could burn out your ignitor.

I've got bandit coils on my bike, but they're paired with a dyna ignition, so they're okay. (Dyna likes 3-ohm coils, IIRC.)

In reference to the wire length issue, I ended up buying a several feet of plug wire from some online parts store (don't honestly remember which one), and luckily for me when I pulled the original wires out dang near all of the gray silicone came out with them.

When I did final re-assembly, after a bit of test-fitting to make sure my depth was appropriate, I made sure to use a good amount of dielectric silicone. Then I just put some gasket sealer around the last 1/4 inch of wire as I was inserting it into the coil, for a little more moisture resistance.

Thanks for the info, I am planning on using the Bandit coils and installing a Dyna S system at the same time for my "winter ignition upgrade".
